Trigger warning! Homophobia

I walk down the hall with my friend Tara while talking about all the hard homework we get in English class. I groan when she mentions the project we have to do soon including writing our favorite and least favorite word fifty times. It sucks.

But my day is made when I see Dan walking down the hall with his really nice friend Jamie. Jamie smiles at me as he leaves Dan when Dan stops to talk to me.

"Hey Dan," I grin at him. "Want to go to Starbucks sometime with week?"

"Sure!" Dan says quickly and blushes. "Just my friends like to go downtown often so we have to be careful to not see them."

I hesitate. Is Dan embarrassed to be around me? Like, they would probably see it as a platonic thing so what's the problem? "Uh, okay." I frown after he walks away and go to Tara.

"You guys got a date?" She asks with a smirk.

I panic and give her a confused look.

"Oh, c'mon. It's not like there's nothing between you too, I totally can see it." Tara whispers some of it.

"Oh..." I look down and she assures me that it's fine and she won't tell anyone. She's my best friend, but I was afraid to tell her about everything because I haven't mentioned any bring about my sexuality to anyone yet. I'm not even sure of it. "Okay, yes. We have a date. But he says if we see his friends there we have to hide or something. Like there's something wrong with us hanging out. Like he's embarrassed to be with me."

"Huh," Tara bites the inside of her cheek and chews it a little. She does that when she's thinking. "His friends are kind of douches. Maybe he's just afraid of homophobia and stuff. And face it, you aren't exactly the most popular kid."

"I guess that's true. And neither of us are popular so you have got nothing to say on that matter," I giggle.

"True." Tara grabs her book from her locker and goes to her study hall period. I sigh. I have games now. I grab my gym clothes and head to the locker room.

"Hey Phil," Jamie walks the rest of the way to games with me. He's always been very friendly. I smile in response. "Are you... Maybe gay? I am fine with it, of course it just seems that you don't really look at girls the way all the other guys do."

"Um... Maybe?" I give in. He's a nice kid. "Just don't tell anyone, okay? I am trusting you."

"I won't, I promise," Jamie walks through the locker room door and holds it for me as I walk through.

"Thanks," I walk in and go to a stall to change. Why would I want to change in front of all the super in shape and may I saw pretty attractive guys? To embarrass myself? I don't think so.

I walk out of the stall and see all the guys in a huddle chuckling about something. I watch them skeptically. What if they all know about me and Dan? No. How would they know? I'm being stupid. They're probably just laughing about some video they saw on the Internet or something.

"Okay everyone! We are playing World Cup today!" Mr. Atkinson yells to all my classmates and we all gather around him. "Partner up!"

All the boys find their friends in the class and I turn to the girls who are also looking for their friends. I stand in he middle of everyone and look around to see if Jamie has a partner.

"Jamie! Do you need a partner?" I call to him from across a crowd of boys. All the boys mutter somethings I can't hear.

Jamie turns and laughs at me. "No one is gonna be your partner, fag. You might come onto me."

That gets a laugh from most of the people in my class.

"Hey, hey!" Mr. A steps in. "If you have to say something like that again you're going to the office. That's your warning."

I feel tears well in my eyes. I can't believe him.

"Now does anyone want to be partners with Mr. Lester here?" The teacher asks. No one says anything. "Anyone? Okay, Lester you can be in a group of three with, uh, Mark and Damien."

"I don't feel well. Can I just leave?" I hold my stomach.

"Uh, yeah head up to the nurse's office. Grab your gym clothes," Mr Atkinson send me to the locker rooms and once in there I run to the toilet and barf. I quickly change and go to the nurse's office.

They call my home and, being so close I just walk home. My parents are at work so I use my key to get in the house and run up to my room. I cry into my pillow. I don't get it. Everything was so perfect when me and Dan danced together. Why did it all have to get turned around?

I text Dan that I can't go out this week and turn off my phone.

That morning I tell my mom I'm too sick to go to school and soak a towel in hot water and press it to my face so when she checks if my temperature is hot, she thinks so. She doesn't use a thermometer, just presses her hand to my head. I'm saved.

I do that the whole week. Dan tries to come over but I don't answer the door. My parents are at work so they can't answer the door either.

Tara comes over, though. And I cry to her about what happened.

She promises to beat Jamie up when she sees him.

My mom finally uses a thermometer to check my temperature on Monday and makes me go to school. She drives me and drops me off right up front.

I tried to my first class and ignore everyone trying to talk to me in the hall.

"Hey fag Phil," Jamie snickers and his friends laugh. Dan happens to be with them and stares at him in disbelief. He walks away. He didn't even try to defend me!

But Tara does.

"Eat this, you dick," Tara exclaims before punching him in the nose. Jamie crumples over, holding his now bloody nose.

Tara is one tough cookie for a small, poofy haired girl like her. She's very muscular, she does karate and rock climbing. Im proud of her.

"Tara Saunders! My office, now!" The principal yells. Tara walks off with a satisfied smirk.

"Thank you," I whisper in her ear before she struts off behind the Mr. Williams.

I go through my day with Jamie shooting me death glares during every class we have together.

I walk out of the school and wait for the bus near a tree next to the school.

"Phil!" Dan runs towards me. I sigh.

"Hi," I mutter.

"Are you okay?" Dan asks and sets a hand on my shoulder. I shake me head.

"Why didn't you even try to defend me? Tara punched him, you know. She actually cares about me," I cross my arms and look down.

"I do care about you!" Dan defends. "I went to get the principal. I tried to explain what happened but before I could he saw Tara punching Jamie and rushed her to his office."

I stare at him. I feel bad now. "Oh."

"Look, I'm sorry. I should have said something to that ass," Dan groans.

"It's fine," I smile. "Can I kiss you?"

Dan looks at me with a grin. "Yeah."

He leans in and kisses me. We're at the side of the school, so we assume are fine.

"Dan?!" A voice sounds from behind the wall. "You too?"

It's Jamie. He has his phone. He was recording us. Of course he was.
