Chapter 3: The 800lb Gorilla in the Room:Taking Responsibility for Your Life
Question: If someone we're to break into your home and steal something very valuable; and you call the police to report the burglary. The police tell you they are not able to respond to your call right away, as a matter of fact, they do not show up until early the next morning. You find out a week later that one of your neighbors saw the burglary take place, but does not want to say anything because they don't like you. Next, you begin to receive charges on all of your credit cards that you obviously did not make. It might be connected to the burglary so you cancel all of your cards and try to repair the damage that was done.
In this scenario, with whom would you be angry? Would it be the burglar who obviously committed the criminal act of breaking and entering also theft. Or, would it be the vindictive neighbor who wants to see bad things happen to you. Maybe, it's the police who failed to show up in a timely fashion. There's no one else to blame, right?! You made sure the house was secure before you went to dinner and you called the police as soon as you figured something was wrong. You are also nice to all of your neighbors and you are still trying to understand why that person doesn't like you.
Might I suggest there is one other that is being sorely over-looked. This culprit is always creating havoc in your life, yet he goes un-noticed. He helped destroy your marriage last year, he also caused you to lose your job to a younger, more qualified employee. "Who is this person?" you may ask. I say to you that the being destroying your life is an 800lb gorilla, cleverly disguised though. He follows you around everywhere, and goes virtually un-noticed. This creature is unique, in that, his ability to thrive and do all these things to you without you even knowing is based on one small piece of info that must remain hidden. Without it, he is powerless to continue in the same manner. What is this info? The 800lb gorilla in the room -is you. The one causing all the chaos is you. With your words and your thoughts, you are creating your life; whether that be good or bad. There is no good or bad filter on what you create. What is produced in the mind will manifest in the physical. Our problem, sometimes is, we do not recognize this fact. We go for months and years thinking and saying things that we do not want in our lives and when they show up, we want to find someone else to blame for our failure.
"If it wasn't for my husband!" "If you had only been there for me!" "The car accident was the other guy's fault!""Who stole the cookie from the cookie jar?" "Who me?!" "Yes you!" "It couldn't be!" "Then who?". I remember playing this game with friends as a child and feeling good about naming one of them as quickly as possible. What's amazing is, if I'm not careful, I will look at situations in my daily life and attach a face to each one. Whether something goes right or wrong, I'll attribute someone else's success or failure to my success or failure.
Everything that takes place in your life-every small miniscule thing and every large gargantuan thing takes place only with your approval. You may shake your head "No!", but in return I will shake my head, "Yes!" You see, no one can think your thoughts for you. Whether you are free or imprisoned, you have to actually think your own thoughts and because thoughts are the base of all matter, your thoughts are the base of your material world. Taking responsibility for your life means taking responsibility for your thinking. Do you realize that what you say with your physical mouth is only ¼ of what you say in total. Your mind continues to speak, even when your mouth stops moving. It is this internal dialog that gets us into trouble.
If we look at the Universe from a higher perspective, we will understand that everything in the Universe vibrates at a particular frequency. Each frequency vibrates at a particular pitch. Each pitch, when corresponding with other frequencies, creates music. So, the entirety of creation is all one big song. Your life is music and you create tunes when you think. You ever wonder why you continually attract the same type of men? Why Sir, you always attract the same type of women? You are serenading a particular type of person with the song you are creating with your thoughts. "Why can't I ever find the right job?!" "I never have any good luck." Internal dialog such as these play a song that is produced for one listener only, one frequency alone. It is created for itself. The frequencies you send out will attract like frequencies. Once your frequency connects with a like frequency, you can say, a child will be born. You will have given birth to the thoughts you were thinking, good or bad. They will come back to you.
