when jay went home, she welcomed her bitter reality with open arms.
instead of a welcomed greeting from her parents, like most kids received, she was greeted with a punch to her jaw.
"where the hell were you?" the husky voice yelled. jay didn't wipe the blood that slipped from the cut on her lip.
"out with a friend," jay boldly replied. if you can even call him that.
"hah, you're a real comedian, huh? you know where to go," the voice snapped. jay growled under her breath before walking off to the basement door.
the owner of the voice unlocked the door, shoving jay inside. jay stumbled down the stairs, clutching into the coat she had on that didn't belong to her.
"you stay put until dinner, you hear me?" the voice snapped.
"yes ma'am," jay obediently said. the door slammed shut, the sound of a lock clicking into place notifying jay that she was now safe. jay scanned the floor for the lantern she kept in the basement, flicking it on.
jay came face to face with the blood stained concrete, reminding her if last nights events. jay punched the cement again, the nerves sending messages to her brain that this action was painful. but the brain turned a blind eye and allowed jay to continue punching the wall. jay didn't cry out in pain, she didn't grunt with frustration. she just silently punched the wall and did so until she could see from the cracks of the wooden planks that boarded up the window that the sun was going down.
jay retracted her hands from the wall and looked over her hands.
cracked, bloody and bruised.
just like her heart and dignity.
jay sighed as she waited for the owner to unlock the door. but jay soon realized she'd be waiting all night.
the sound of the front door slamming shut startled jay, causing her to scramble to the window. she watched as the owner ran off with their friends, their loud whoops and cheers slicing through the near silent night. the car sped off and jay began to pluck the half hammered-in nails, pulling the wood off.
jay pushed the window open and shimmied through, dashing off into the night.
she should have ran to the police station. she should have ran to their neighbors. jay should've ran to a lot of places.
but she ran to her bestfriends house instead. jay knocked on the door, her glances being thrown over her shoulder to see if jay's abuser was in the area.
they weren't.
"hannah, it's me. open up, he's gone for the night and i got out. i need to clean up, too," jay said through the door, her knocks being ignored.
when the door opened, it caught jay off guard.
what also caught jay off guard was the person who swung the door open. to her surprise, it wasn't hannah.
"jay?"
"jin?"
