jay's initial reaction was to just turn around and walk off.
but shock prevented her from doing so.
"uhm, hi?" jay murmured, confusion evident in her tone.
"oh, it's not what it looks like. chanyeol was invited over and he didn't want me to feel left out so he brought me to tag along," jin shrugged nonchalantly.
"oh. well, i'll be going then," jay chuckled nervously, turning on her heel to leave.
"what the hell happened to your face?" jin asked.
jin hadn't noticed it at first, but when jay had turned to go, the streetlight provided some light for jin to see the bruising and swelling on her sweet and delicate face.
"oh, i--"
"jay?? did it happen again?" hannah asked, building more confusion for jin and more stress for jay. jay shut her eyes and released a frustrated sigh before nodding.
"come on in, and let's make it fast. we don't know how much time we have," hannah groaned, grabbing jay's wrist and pulling her inside.
jin stood in shock as he watched the interaction, shutting the door mindlessly as he watched the two girls speed walk to the powder room.
"hey, jin! who was it?" chanyeol asked, his head popping into the hallway where his friend still stood in confusion.
"uh... uhm.. jay," jin finally said, his voice sounding confused and a bit upset that he hadn't been informed of jay's current situation.
"oh, cool! now you won't be the third wheel," chanyeol teased. jin was still facing shock that he ignored the teasing joke his friend had shared.
jin could hear soft whispers coming from the bathroom, the light shining from the gap underneath the door.
"jay, you need to leave," jin could hear hannah whisper.
"hannah, we've already discussed this. it's not happening," jay hissed.
"this is insane! you can't keep going through this!" hannah argued.
"we both know why i can't leave," jay murmured.
"really? because it sounds like your making excuses to stay," hannah replied. there was a painfully awkward silence and jin could sense the tension filled stares being shared amongst the friends.
"you think i want this? hannah, i would love to leave. to have a normal life. to not be scared of people seeing my home life. but i can't because of the connections he has," jay ranted, her voice wavering due to overwhelming sadness she felt.
"jay, that's an excuse and you know it. you don't wanna leave because he's the last piece of your parents you have," hannah said. jin could sense the way hannah cautiously said what she did, treading over dangerous territory.
jin could hear jay scoff and mutter a 'screw you' under her breath before the door was yanked open. jay came face to face with jin for the second time, shock written on both their faces.
"were you eavesdropping?" jay gritted.
"i-uh--"
"spare it. i don't want to see your face ever again. if you say a word about what you've heard, i will cut your balls off myself," jay growled, roughly shoving past jin to head to the front door.
jin watched jay walk out, and when the door shut he tore his gaze away to look at hannah who sat defeatedly on the tile of her bathroom.
"hannah?" jin asked. he knew he shouldn't push the envelope that was threatening to burst, but he had to know who was hurting jay.
sure, he wasn't particularly fond of her, but that doesn't mean she deserves the abuse she receives. nobody does.
hannah finally glanced up at jin with a sad smile and said, "she needs help. but she can't admit it."
"help with what?" jin asked curiously.
hannah could sense the curiosity in jin's voice. it was as if he wasn't looking to pry and be nosy, but to understand the complexity that is jay vanders.
"with... never mind. jin do you think you can catch up to her and drop her off at the park?" hannah asked.
"why not her house?" jin asked, confused as to why hannah would ask him such a thing.
"because jay doesn't like people knowing where she lives," hannah said as if it was the most obvious thing in the world. jin nodded and headed out the front door, shouting to chanyeol on the way out that he'd be back.
jin hopped in his car and quickly surveyed the area, immediately spotting a shivering jay. jin eased up beside her in the car and rolled the passenger window down.
"need a ride? i'm here at hannah's request to take you to the park," jin shouted. jay snapped her head to face jin and frowned. she took a deep inhale and yanked the door open, slipping inside and escaping the cold.
"let's make a quick pit stop before we go to the park," jin smiled, driving off once jay shut her door and buckled up.
"where to? i can't be out too long," jay murmured worriedly.
"it won't take long, i promise. i just wanna stop at the convenience store," jin smirked.
"for what?"
"for some cookies, of course."
