~New Start

            Welcome to college, I thought as I saw the big “StanfordUniversity” sign. Truthfully I was more than a bit nervous. I think this could be my big break, a fresh start away from my parents. The only thing I’d miss from back home was my little sister Mackenzie. She was four years younger than me, but we were basically inseparable. We were connected in a bond stronger than that of sister.

I opened my trunk to take out my bags. I had two suitcases, one blue and the other red. They are very regular sized and not as heavy as I thought they’d be. I entered the hall that said “Girl’s Dorms” only to be stopped as soon as I stepped into the lobby. In the middle was a table with a girl sitting behind it, a clipboard in her hand. She seemed about my age, but she had short blonde hair and light blue eyes.

“Name please,” she said.

“Jade…Jade Summers,” I replied.

“Ok,” she said, giving me a key and writing something down on her clipboard. Before the drive I’d studied everything from the school map to my dorms. The halls were a light yellow, with dark carpets. From what I could figure out they had 4 floors. As I went up the stairs to the third floor I sighed. As of today I was no longer Jade Summers of Louisville, Kentucky. I was Jade Summers, and independent college student.

When I got to my door, I set my bags down and pulled my key out. I entered slowly to see if anyone was inside, but didn’t find anyone. The left side of the room was filled with Little Mix posters and there were suitcases on the bed that looked like they hadn’t been touched. Pulling myself away from my thoughts I opened my suitcase and started neatly transferring my close to the dresser beside my bed.

After I finished unpacking it was already about 8pm and I went into the bathroom to take a shower. When I got out I changed into some blue short shorts and a white tank top. Then I slowly closed my eyes and fell asleep.

I woke up to the sound of the door slamming and a voice yelling “Liar!” I stretched a bit under my blanket and slowly opened my eyes. There was a girl about my height, with light brown curly hair. She had on a light blue dress and dark blue tights, along with white ballet flats. She looked at me surprised, and then said “I’m so sorry, me and my stupid relationship problems. You must be my roommate, I’m Katlyn.”

“Hey, I’m Jade,” I said, getting up after looking at the time. I got out my favorite pair of black yoga pants, and a black sports bra. I changed in the bathroom and came out to put my sneakers on. 

“Sorry I have to go, but my first class starts in an hour, I’m sure we’ll talk later,” I said before closing the door. I jogged at a slow, steady pace for 35 minutes, before heading back in a hurry. I made it back in 10 minutes, and Katlyn was nowhere to be seen.

I changed into my grey one shoulder dress and grey flats. I went to the mirror to do my hair. Normally I’d put it in a ponytail, and call it a day, but today was a new day for me. I braided it into a fishtail braid before putting a white bow on top. My green eyes, with a hint of yellow were filled with light. As if they knew what was to come and that it would be something good.
