~Treading Water

*Jade’s P.O.V

As soon as I got back to my dorm more tears seemed to stream from my eyes. I took the dress and put it on the bed along with my veil. Then I put on an oversized green t-shirt and light blue shorts when Katlyn burst in the room, stumbling. I could tell she was drunk.

“Hey,” she said a bottle of vodka in hand.

“Sit down, you look like you’re about to faint,” I told her. Then she comes over and plumps down on my bed beside me. She lays down and looks at the ceiling before asking, “So, what are you doing here?”

“Just got bored, that’s all,” I said. She nodded her head before saying, “I’m here because of my stupid brother.”

“What happened?”

“He saw Hunter and I dancing and yelled at me as if I were a child!” she exclaimed. Then she took a big gulp of Vodka.

“You might want to slow down,” I said.

“Don’t. I don’t need another Liam telling me what to do,” she replied.

“So why didn’t you just yell at him or fight back?”

“Hunter said he needed to talk to him,” she said.

“And you left then alone together?”

“Look, I trust Hunter and I’m so drunk I probably won’t remember any of this is in the morning.” I laughed and laid beside her as my eyes roamed the room. I was like that for a couple more minutes before weariness started pulling me in.

“Kate?” I asked and got no response. I turned my head to look at her face and found she was asleep. I got up to turn off the lights when there was a knock at the door. I opened it to find Liam.

“Hey, is Katlyn in there?” he asked.

“Yeah but she just fell asleep, sorry,” I told him.

“It’s okay, tell her I’ll be here tomorrow around noon,” he said.

“Okay,” I whispered. Then I started to close the door and he stopped it with his foot.

“Can we…talk?” he asked.

“Now’s not the best time.”

“Just a second,” he said pulling me into the hall.

“What is it Liam?” I asked.

“I just wanted to tell you that I’m sorry if I’ve been really weird these days,” he told me.

“It’s not your fault, we haven’t seen each other in a long time and things were really…intense between us,” I said, carefully minding my words. I was leaning on the door and it seemed like Liam was walking closer and closer to me.

“I loved you Jade…I still love you,” he told me.

“Liam stop, what we had is in the past. Please don’t do this,” I whispered putting my hand up to distance us. He stepped back and looked down at me.

“Okay, but I want you to be comfortable with me and not push me away.”

“I can only be your friend, nothing more,” I told him.
