In the farthest corner, where the light barely even reached sat a girl, a girl with striking ginger hair that fell down to her hips and brown eyes, dark brown eyes.
She had her head falling against the wall beside her, brown eyes staring blankly foward. The expression of a girl with no focus.
"Iona would you please pay attention!"
For the girl it seemed as if light suddenly came pouring into the depths of her corner, as Mr Harrison yelled her name accross the class.
Her head snapped up and her eyes focused on Mr Harrison, his face etched with frustration.
She sighed and let her head fall, staring at her empty notes page on the desk.
"Alright, class dissmissed" Mr Harrison announced moments later, over the noise of children already escaping their seats in time with the bell.
"Wait, Iona. I would like to see you for a minute" He stated, the brown eyed girl stopped in her tracks and turned to her new teacher glumly, not bothering to fake a smile. She was fed up with faking smiles and trying to make friends...trying to fit in.
"Everything...okay?" Mr Harrison began, stepping out in front of his desk and leaning against it, his arms folded. "I know moving to a new school can be difficult, especially this late in the school year...but have you even spoken to a single student since you arrived last week?" He asked, sounding concerned and confused.
"Yes."
Mr Harrison raised his eyebrows and Iona sighed, looking away from him "No" she answered again, truthfully this time and Mr Harrison screwed up his face, as if holding back the urge to sigh.
"You know, this whole thing would be a lot easier with a friend..." he said slowly but Iona refused to react, she stared blankly up at the teacher, her chest burning with each breath she took. "I can schedule you in for a session with the school counsellor-"
"I dont need counselling! I dont need help! I dont need a friend or advice from you, an English teacher who has no idea what he is even talking about!" Iona burst out, interrupting him, her heart pounding so hard she wouldnt be surprised if Mr Harrison could hear it. Mr Harrison didnt look angry, remaining calm he opened his mouth to speak but Iona didnt let him "I'm fine." She stated in a low, calm voice before turning around and walking out the door.
She swung her bag onto her shoulder and headed down the crowded corridors, she tried to slow her heart rate but it only seemed to speed up and she was becoming short of breath.
The sounds of teenagers shutting their lockers sounded like bombs going off in her ears and the laughter sounded more like screaming. Even her breaths sounding like the heavy heaving of an animal in her head, when she looked around her all she saw was blurred shapes and suddenly she wasnt even sure where her own feet were, the next thing she knew, the floor was smashing into her face and she blacked out.
.........
"Glad to see you awake miss Grey" the unfamiliar female voice met Iona's ears and she shifted slightly to see where she was.
"What happened?" Iona croaked quietly.
"I was hoping you could tell me, another student told me you collapsed but that doesnt tell me why" the woman, who Iona supposed was the nurse, waited silently for a response. When she didnt get one she continued prodding "you look physically healthy aside from the newly acquired head injury, can you describe to me what happened before you fell?"
Iona forced her body upwards, she was lying on a bed and she propped herself up against the wall, the nurse didnt look too happy about this but she said nothing. "Um nothing, i just tripped" Iona lied, wanting to leave.
"Tripped over what?" The nurse spoke slowly, choosing her words carefully and it sounded almost like a challenge, as if she could sense the lie and was testing Iona to see if she would lie again...
Iona hesitated, focusing on the Nurses determined face "umm, my shoelace i guess" she stumbled, instantly regretting her choice of accident as her shoes didnt have shoelaces.
The nurse's eyebrow raised slightly and she silently rose to her feet and walked accross the room, "I called your Father, as it is a head injury i suggest you go home and rest." She stated quietly in a monotonous voice, "you may go".
Iona didnt stick around to ask questions or to bother protesting, she swung herself off the bed, feeling slightly light headed she stumbled on her way out but kept going. She left the nurses office where she walked right into someone.
"Oh hey are you okay?" A boy's voice asked and when Iona looked up, his eyes were focused on her head. He had been leaning against the wall outside the nurses office.
"Who are you?" She asked, furrowing her eyebrows at the boy she had never seen before.
"I'm the one who saw you...uh...fall, and got the nurse, just wanted to check you were okay, you hit the floor pretty hard, i'm Parker by the way" he stated calmly, with a confident smile on his face the entire time.
"Right...well thanks i guess" was all Iona could think to say and she turned to walk down the hall.
"Arent you going to tell me you're name?" Parker called from behind her and she stopped, looking back for a second.
"I have to go, my dad's waiting"
And with that she walked out the front doors of the school, as she headed for the carpark, she saw her reflection in a car window, the left side of her head had turned a bluish red and she still had bags under her eyes. Disgusted by her appearance, she stumbled towards her dads car and got in.
"Oh, hi! I was about to come in and get you, you didnt have to come out by yourself" her dad stumbled as she sat down.
"Im fine dad can we just go home"
"What happened? Did someone push you? Did you fall? Was it something else? Oh god does it hurt? Maybe we should go to the hospital for a proper check-"
"Dad!" Iona cried, forcing him to silence, her eyes staring ahead at the school. "Can we just go home." She wasnt going to waste years of hiding panic attacks and mental breakdowns by telling him about them now, because of some stupid school. No, it was always 'i fell' or 'i just went for a run, thats why i am short of breath", she could never bring herself to tell him that she had frequent panic attacks and felt miserable most of the time. No she couldnt tell him...not yet.
Her dad still hadnt started the car, her gaze stayed focused ahead, she gritted her teeth and said "I'm fine."
