Another gust of wind blew from behind her, turning her hair into a tangled mess of straw like strands. Hera sighed at the crow's nest on top of her head. She ran her fingers through her dark locks in vain attempts to fix it. Though she was pretty sure the wind is going to bless her with another crow's nest in a few seconds.
By the time she had set foot into the gates of her house, it was already dark. The stone pathway leading to the door was made of small pebbles and lined by fresh, neatly cut grass. Hera walked lazily over the rocks, kicking the green ones as she let out a yawn.
She stopped mid way through the stone path. Her eyebrows scrunched in confusion as she looked through the window downstairs. The lights in the dinning hall were on. Which means granny is home. She should not be home this early. And she wasn't alone.
The cider walls blocked her vision and she couldn't see the visitor. But she could see the look of apology in granny's face as she ducked her head at something the person said.
Hera walked towards the window to catch a glimpse of the man. Or woman. Standing on her tippy toes she peeked through the glass.
Shit!
She ducked her head under the window.
Crap crap crap crap crap.
Her knees hit the ground. She crawled on the grass and hid behind a bunch of bushes under the window.
Sitting on the chair opposite to granny was none other than Mrs. Sutton aka James's partly crazy mom.
She was in deep shit.
"She's a very troubled young lady Martha. She needs guidance. And how are you going to provide her with that when you are never home," Mrs. Sutton's voice should not be heard through the closed window. But Hera could hear her loud and clear. And the more she heard the more she could feel her blood beginning to boil.
"She's a very troubled young lady Martha," Hera mimicked her words. "Lady please, do the world a favor and check on your own son before you go calling someone else 'troubled' ," she mumbled to herself.
"I'm very, very sorry Susan. But you know I can't constantly watch over her. How can I pay the bills if I-" granny weakly protested. But she cut her off.
"Do you realize what she has done?," she choked, the tears in her throat clogged her voice. "She made James go deaf. My son can never hear again because of your spoiled little-,"
This time granny was the one who cut he off, "Susan calm down. He's not going to stay deaf for the rest of his life. His ruptured eardrum will heal within a matter of four months, three if you're careful."
Mrs. Sutton continued to shout and granny kept on apologizing on Hera's behalf. Her calm demeanor never faltered no matter how furious Mrs. Sutton was.
Her blow actually made James go deaf? Maybe not forever but three or four months is a long time. Hera couldn't help the small smile tugging at the corner of her lips. She couldn't say she didn't feel a little bad. But all her regrets disappeared as soon as she started making a list of all the horrible things Mr. I'm-the-king-of-the-world-cough-assholes had done to her friends and so many other people. She understood why his mom was upset. Who wouldn't be? But then again if she knew half of the things his son was Hera bet she would see it coming.
"Why does stuff like this always happens to me," Hera mumbled to herself. Since that incident between her and James she had been absolutely sure that his idiot friends would try to corner her beat the crap out of her any day now. And she was completely prepared to beat the crap out of them. But this? Come on! She had never expected his mom to be the one to show up at their house.
