Kade's POV
To say I was shocked when Emma agreed to me keep John would have been an understatement, but I was glad she did. I wanted her to know that she could trust me with him, that I was capable of taking care of him. It was important to me that she knew that I cared about John. I wanted her to know that while I loved having a relationship with her, I also understood that John would always come first to her and I respected and admired that.
"Kay, hungry." John told me from his car seat.
"We're almost there. Do you like spaghetti?" I glanced at him in the rearview mirror. He vigorously nodded his head.
We made it to my parents house not even ten minutes later. As soon as I pulled in the drive way, my mother was running out to the truck. She was excited to see John, it had been a long time since she'd had a baby to play with. She was unbuckling him from his seat, talking to him before I could even get out of the truck.
"Are you hungry?" She asked him as we walked to the house.
He nodded his head, "Me starving."
"Well I have spaghetti and a chocolate cake. And I have some toys that you can play with when you get done." He grinned at her, she was winning over his heart that was for sure. Toys and cake, those were every kids favorite words.
"Where'd you get toys from?" I raised an eyebrow at her.
She shrugged, "They're just some old ones of yours and Jace's that I saved."
When we stepped into the living room, it became clear that her previous statement was a partial lie. There were a few toys that had belonged to Jace and I, but many of them were brand new. She had gone out and bought things for John to play with. I kissed her cheek.
"What was that for?" She asked suspiciously.
"You went out and bought toys, Mom."
She shrugged like it was nothing, "I figured he would need something to entertain him while he was here."
"It also means that you think Emma and I are serious and that you're hoping we last." I suggested, I saw a smile tug at her lips.
"She's a sweet girl, and she has done a good job with this little boy. I wouldn't mind you keeping her around."
"That really means a lot to me." She didn't know how much I appreciated hearing that. I wanted her to approve of Emma, because I knew she was unsure about our relationship at first.
"I just want you to be happy son and she makes you happy... Happier than I ever saw the you with Ella. I can tell that you love her and John."
"Apparently I'm not the only one who loves him." I grinned at her as I motioned around the room, where John was busy looking at all of the new toys, you would have thought it was Christmas, he looked thrilled.
"Grab your boy and let's eat lunch. Your daddy has probably already dug in." She gave me a light shove on my shoulder.
******
"Thanks for lunch, Mom, I really appreciate it." I said about an hour later as I stood up to leave.
"You can bring him back anytime. It's been nice having a kid around again." My dad nodded to the sleeping toddler who was in my mother's arms.
