I sit on the roof of the Empire State Building and look up. Somewhere up there were the Greek Gods. How the Earth could maintain all this magic I have no idea.
"Can I sit with you," I turn to see Eric.
"Sure," I whisper, looking back at the sky.
We just sit there, with no need to speak. The sun started setting and I automatically think Apollo.
"Don't over think it," Eric says, reading my mind, "If you tried to believe that a Greek God rode the sun everyday, then what did the Roman Sun God do? If there's two sets of Gods, there's sure to be more, so what about them? Then there's other beliefs and, of course, Science. So do all of them have an effect on the sun, or does one and the rest just have the title. The hardest thing about being a S.A.M.A agent is knowing that it all exists, but you need the right thing for your mission. It gets harder to tell right from wrong, trust me."
Eric smiles faintly.
"So what do you do?" I ask, my attention now on him.
"You don't give up, you don't face the facts but rather the opinions. We aren't doing this just for the fun of it, we're here to save humans," he answers.
"How do you know that S.A.M.A does the right thing? Was M.A.A.B right? Should we get rid of all magic?" I look Eric in the eye, this has been bugging me since Jeremiah and I had got back.
Eric sighs, "You can't. We just need to believe that embracing magic and controlling it is the best way."
I stare at the yellows and oranges invading the sky, the normal buzz of traffic and people still alive. This was my city. This was my country. This was my world.
I could understand the passion Eric had for S.A.M.A, we have to protect the people.
"I wanted to apologize, Sarah," Eric breaks the silence, "You showed the commitment that is well beyond your age. You never gave up, even after your chances at being a S.A.M.A agent were crushed."
"The first thing you learn about a S.A.M.A agent is that they never give up," I recite.
"I can't believe you still remember that," Eric chuckles.
"That was a long time ago," it was the first thing I was ever taught.
"Go visit them," Eric says.
"Who?"
"Your family," he continues, "You know, your aunt and uncle and that cousin of yours, Sophie, is it?"
"Sienna. Really?" agents never get to visit their family.
"You deserve it, besides," he smiles, "We need you bushy tailed and fluffy eyed for your next mission."
"That's not the saying," I say.
Eric waves it off with a flick of his hand, "I'll leave you to pack." I watch as the elevator doors enclose him.
I still can't believe that I'm a S.A.M.A agent.
So my first mission isn't exactly how I'd planned it, but at least I have an award, a family out there.
I'm Sarah Jane Thompson, and I will never, give up.
