The morning after we came home, every student from Diamond C. High School received and email saying that we will no longer be using the building until it was done with reconstruction. Until then, us students were supposed to gather up at the school's nearby warehouse and bring all of our textbooks and learning materials. Veronica, Leyna, Amber, and I planned to get the cheapest school bags since we 'lost' ours and Tracy*s was having a big sale on school bags and satchels so we all got new bags for considerably low prices. Thank you, Mom's magazines.
I came to school fully prepared and I came early because I wanted a meet up spot. Our usual meet up spot was the roof but since we aren't allowed to go near the school, I scavenged around to see if there was any place for us to chat and discuss matters.
While lurking around the area, I found a small storage room that was hidden in the second floor's corner of the warehouse. It was obvious that no one had checked the second floor since it was dusty and the only way to get up was to use the ladder that was pinned to the wall, which also wasn't touched and covered in spider webs. You have to keep in mind that you have to take down the ladder and put it back up each time or else people will grow suspicious.
As I was waiting for the teachers to arrive, I ran outside to hide behind the warehouse. Until three to seven other people walked into the warehouse, I would enter. Our day progressed like any other school day. Leyna had gone back to clinging onto Jisoo or Joshua, and Barry was still trying to make Tammi smile as much as possible.
As the day went by, three boys were dealing with matters that looked like serious pains. Barry was yelled at for not having his science book, Ashton was too afraid to get yelled at so he used his literature book to make it look like he had his book but he kept glancing over at a classmate's textbook. Barry and Ethan had no money to but lunch but it was all fine since Ashton paid for Barry's and I gave Ethan half of mine. Amber and Veronica teased and nudged at me while I blushed after giving Ethan my food. Though I blushed, it felt as if my heart was tightening as much as before. It didn't race as fast and it didn't clench when I thought about him.
A few minutes before lunch break ended, I talked about the hidden room on the second floor which I couldn't show them until the day ended, of course. Like that, we continued our weeks in the warehouse, living like normal students while keeping in mind all the troubles we faced. It wasn't long before the school was finished with remodeling, if you consider eight weeks a short period of time.
During the eight weeks, I questioned my crush for Ethan and why it was so abruptly fading away. Even on the first day of returning to school I asked myself "Why are my feelings floating away so easily? It's been five whole years since I've first fallen in love with him so there must be a reason for my heart to sway so easily. "
I was taken out of my daze by Veronica who gently patted my back as she passed me through the school entrance. I then ran to our usual hang out, following Veronica.
" 'Morning, Veronica!" I shouted into her ear as I caught up with her.
" 'Morning, Marissa!" She screamed back.
We giggled idiotically as sprinted across the campus, being weary of the teachers. Leaping up the stairs, and jumping into the chained up door to once again see the skyline emitting light that came from the sun. Sitting there, staring blankly at the sky was Barry.
"Yo." I calmly and quietly greeted.
"Hey." Veronica said, motionlessly. "Did you finally get a science textbook yet?"
"Nah. They costed too much to buy online so I'm waiting for the librarian to give me a used textbook that costs way less." Barry sighed. Barry's family is friends with the librarian, which explains the situation a lot better.
Veronica and I sat down along with Barry and the three of us continued to watch the remainder of the city glow orange. The rest of the lot came and decided to eventually sit down and stare at the city which was cut in half. One side looked like a desert while the other side reminded me of humble homes and large tall buildings and old, vacant lots.
The last person to join us was Ethan but the bell, unfortunately, rang a few minutes after he arrived. Everyone got up and "Later" or "Bye" Before heading to class. We lined up to get out of the narrow door that allowed us to enter and exit our secret meet up. It was strange how Ethan didn't budge to get out so I decided to cut in front of him to get to my classes. As I was about to step out, a hand had yanked me back.
"Marissa...I like you. Wanna go out?"
