CHAPTER 13: Transition
Doctor Rufus had been a great help for my village. He donated a check for us to use to build the post office station. He also sent one of his nurse representatives named Chris Damon, to serve his duty here for four years or more if he ever liked to extend. Alice had his partner now, in case she needed a hand.
I was heading to the station when I saw Rick, a carpenter, varnishing the furniture that he built for the new post office while Kieran, was painting the finished walls, it was green, probably his favorite color.
“Nice work we got here!” I approached them before I walk inside the station. “Hey, Friz.” They both greeted me at the same time. I laughed. “I supposed this is going to be your new office Kieran.”
“Yeah, right Friz.” He replied delightedly grinning then continued painting the wall.
“Friz, you might want to check out our new truck that just came earlier. The dude who brought the truck said it was from Doctor Rufus.” Rick informed me, gave me a note from Doctor Rufus, and showed me where the truck was.
Dr. Rufus was so generous, but I was thinking that it’s too much for a deal. I owed him a lot and he didn’t ask a single favor from me. He might be up to something or hiding something, but then I already made a contract with him. I wished this contract wouldn’t be similar from the worst thing that I could remember.
After awhile, I left them to continue their work. I passed by from Jane, smiling, sitting on her desk. She really loved writing, in some ways that I haven’t read any of it. She wasn’t proud of showing her talents to me, but I always reminded her to tell me everything she should.
I entered my room, having a good mood to start, taking that I was ready to open and read what’s inside this ‘love letter’ that my sister sent Kieran to me. I sat on my desk chair and started reading.
Dear big brother,
I am so happy that you are alive! I hope you can remember where we actually met. I was the woman from the post office. As you see, I am rich and famous. I bet you didn’t recognize me, I’m sorry for being such a beautiful woman. But anyways, I found your location and here it is my very first love letter to you. I just want to tell you that I missed you so much. I wish we could see each other some time.
I want to tell you that this won’t be the last letter you’ll receive from me. I’ll be travelling abroad for a wonderful training and you won’t be hearing from me, but I promise you when I get back, I’ll have a surprise for you. You don’t know how many years that I’ve been wanting to give some presents to my big brother. But you left us, and everything has all changed. I also—
Jane knocked on the door and entered, stopping me from reading. She probably saw me reading the letter as she asked me if I was all right, noticed that I was a little upset.
I snapped and put the letter under a folder. “Yes, Jane I’m good.” But in reality, Snow’s statements in the letter baffled me. I didn’t know everything about her personality and agenda. Her sincerity in the letter was hard for me to consider and I thought Jane shouldn’t get involved from it.
“So, who’s that letter from, father?” she asked me after she sat on the front chair of my desk.
“Just a letter from Mr. Linen, he asked to double the delivery. He really liked the quality of our fabric.”
I made her believe on what I said but I couldn’t stop her from asking me why I looked so upset. Jane was good at scrutinizing someone’s face, that’s why we always ended up in a quarrel so often. But I told her not to worry and grabbed a candy then gave it to her, smiling.
