AUTHORS NOTE
So before I get started with this story I wanted to give a warning that this story will have sexual situations, lots of religion controversy, and language. If you do not like stories with those things, I recommend not reading.
I hope you guys enjoy and remember, it's just a story ;) there is no need to get butt hurt over little things"Excuse me, are you even listening to a word I'm saying to you?!" Adeline's mother screams. Three snaps in her face was all it took to piss her off. These snaps from her mother made her want to take her hand and shove it down her throat. Adeline doesn't even glance at her mother as she continues to walk down the aisle of Walmart. She grabs travel size shampoo, conditioner, and all the other essentials for going on vacation, and throws them into the squeaky buggy. And by "vacation" she means a trip to Florida that she has been forced to go on by her mother.
"Are you going to need snacks?" Her mother continues to question. Adeline shrugs her shoulders.
"You tell me. You're the one who signed me up for this stupid camp behind my back anyway." She snaps, and continues to walk. She could have heard her mother scoff from across the store.
"Oh grow up! You've been complaining about this for weeks. Don't you realize that this is a great opportunity to grow closer to God and your friends?" Adeline whips around to her mother and she hears the buggy skirt to a stop.
"How many times do I have to tell you? I don't want to become closer to a God that doesn't exist! He's not real mom! He's not! So stop shoving your religion down my throat because I am completely tired of it!"
Adeline could see the shoppers of the store staring at her, but she continued to belt out her feelings."And second of all, the people at church are all hypocrites! They preach and preach about being "pure" and full of "love" but they judge somebody the second that realize they aren't like them!" She stopped to take a breath and noticed her mothers face growing red and tears forming in her eyes. She doesn't like hurting her mom, but she was tired of people telling her what to believe and how to live her life.
Adeline has grown up in church her whole life. Literally the week after she was born she was sitting in service with her mother. She never thought much about it until she started growing older. Around the year of her seventeenth birthday, she started to question if there even was a God. If God existed, why did bad things happen to good people? Why did he take her dad when she needed him most? All these thoughts made her drift away from church and the people there. People are always saying, "It's God's plan" but why would God kill innocent and loving people?
The thoughts have continued to race even now. Adeline is now eighteen and this will be her last trip with her youth group and the last time she has to deal with fake friends. Her mother wipes her face, lifts her head and looks straight at Adeline. "You're going to camp whether you like it or not."
"Yeah, I figured that. Thanks." Adeline whispers, while ignoring judgemental stares, and storms down to the front entrance.
"Adeline! You get back here and speak to me right now!" Her mother continues to scream. Her scream was so loud that her voice cracked from the intensity of it. Adeline throws the hood over her head and runs out of the store. She keeps running, down the parking lot and into the street. This isn't the first time she has ran from her problems, and most certainly will not be her last. But in that moment, she felt free. Free from the bullshit that she calls life. She takes the phone out of her pocket and scrolls down to her voicemails. She clicks on the voicemail named "Dad" and brings the phone to her ear. She continues to walk at a slow pace on the sidewalk and the thunder in the sky indicates that it is about to rain.
"Hey honey, it's daddy. Just letting you know that I'll be a bit late tonight. I got held up at work. Make sure to tell your mother as well, she wasn't picking up her phone. It sucks that I get to miss your famous spaghetti! Oh well. I will see you tonight. I love you honey."
Adeline doesn't remember the tears forming, but by the end of the message, her coat was soaked with them. Everyday for the past two years, she has listened to the last voicemail her father left her before he died. That night, he swerved off the road, hit a pole, and died on impact.
Why did he have to leave her in this cruel world? Why can't he just come back so their family can be whole again? Why was her mother so calm after hearing that her husband was gone? So many questions crowd in her mind that it's hard to walk straight. As the thunder gets louder, the rain starts to pour. As Adeline looks to the sky, she realizes that this is a perfect representation of her life. A big, giant, loud, mess.
She hears a car drive up and a honk of a horn. "Adeline! Get in the car right now! You're going to get sick!" Her mother screams. She was surprised her mother actually came, usually she just lets her run off without a look back. Adeline wanted to continue to be stubborn but who wants to walk all the way home in the rain? Not her. So she opens the door and slams it dramatically. She sets the phone down on her lap without locking it so she can dry off her face.
"You really should delete that." Her mother says with a monotone voice as she looks at the old voicemail.
"Yeah." Adeline whispers, as she leans her head against the window.
"I didn't know what snacks you wanted so I just grabbed random things." Her mother changes the subject.
"Okay." There was no point in arguing anymore, plan no church camp was a no-go.
"You need to start packing when you get home."
"Okay." Adeline repeats, barely listening.
As her mom continues to bark orders, she realizes that the only positive thing about this camp is that she doesn't have to hear her voice for a whole month.
