Chapter 1: Jason

If not for Percy, Jason would have been squashed like a pancake. As it was, he got taught a pretty good lesson in humility.

He had been taking watch with Percy. Depressing wasn't really a word that would normally describe being around him, but with him staring sadly into the gloom, and pretty much ignoring Jason, there wasn't really much room for conversation. Not that Jason didn't try. But the truth was, after the gryphon attack a couple hours ago, the two of them were so exhausted, Jason wasn't really surprised that Percy wasn't in the mood for a chat

Then again, Percy had seemed so melancholy since they had set out from Epirus the day before. He and Annabeth were still refusing to talk about Tartarus; all that Jason managed to get out of Percy was that it was a monster-infested hell-hole with acid air, rivers of fire, and a goddess with serious self-esteem issues. But anything that could reduce Percy to the sad shell of his former self seemed pretty bad to Jason. He wondered if Percy would ever be the same again,

"I'll be fine, Grace, Annabeth and I just need some time to recover," Percy suddenly said, as if he knew what Jason had just been thinking,

"H-how did you...?" Jason spluttered. Percy grinned slightly,

"It was kind of written all over your face,"

Jason decided not to reply to that.

He squinted through the fog. It had come down a couple hours ago, and since then, had covered everything like a big, white blanket, making it impossible to see. A cold breeze swept through the ship, making Jason shiver, and wish he had brought a jacket, or at least a sweater. Even though they were in Greece, in the middle of summer, since the Argo II had set out from Epirus the day before, the weather had been so freezing sometimes Jason thought they were sailing in the wrong direction...maybe somewhere closer to Russia than Greece. Piper had speculated that Khione might be messing with them again, but Jason hoped it wasn't. He had no desire to be turned into an ice sculpture again

Next to him, Percy suddenly tensed,

"Is it just me, or is there something in front of us?" he asked. Jason looked again, and saw that Percy was right. Some distance away, he could just make out two hulking shapes.

"Please tell me those aren't monsters," Percy muttered, "The only monsters I've ever seen that big are shrimpzilla, and a Lydian Drakon,"

Jason made a mental note to ask later how Percy was still alive.

Percy squinted so hard, it looked like he was trying to see all the way to Athen

"Stupid fog..." he muttered, "I mean, seriously Zeus?"

The mention of Jason's dad suddenly gave Jason an idea. He concentrated hard, and slowly, surely, the mist began to part. After a couple seconds, a kind of tunnel had formed through it, a clear line of sight, showing...

"They're islands," Jason said in surprise, "I think there are two. But Leo said there aren't any islands between this part of the sea, and the mainland. Do you think – "
