Chapter 15: Percy
Percy would have liked to say he kept a cool head. After defeating Titans, giants, and flying pigs, seeing his friend get swallowed by a giant snake was no biggie, right?
Wrong.
The truth was, the moment Jason disappeared into the Amphy's gigantic mouth, Percy completely freaked out. He yelled out and rode a wave, using it to catapult him up onto the snake's head, trying his best to grip onto the scales as the snake jerked its head, trying to dislodge him.
"Let...him...go!" Percy screamed, banging the serpent's head with Riptide, "cough...him...up...NOW!"
The serpent hissed defiantly, and Percy didn't have to speak snake to get a good idea of what it was saying.
Nothing doing. Now get off me or you're next!
As it jerked its head wildly, Percy thanked Blackjack silently for years of experience of being able to hold onto flying objects. Finally, after a few minutes, the snake seemed to get tired of trying to throw Percy off, and settled for hissing madly, and trying to snap at him. But Percy wasn't waiting for a cue. The moment the snake slowed down, he pushed himself up the head, and managed to plunge Riptide into one of the glowing eyes.
A light went out, and the serpent shrieked in pain; Percy almost felt sorry for it. Until the other head whipped around and tried to swallow him.
Percy batted it away with Riptide, plunging down to the sea again. For a few seconds, all he saw was teeth as he tried to twist in the air and evade the serpent's fangs. As he fell, Percy suddenly felt pain shoot through his leg, and felt his head knock against something hard. Next thing he knew, he was floating in the water, blood gushing from a fang wound in his right calf. Why it wasn't healing in the water, Percy had no idea. Maybe it was too major a wound, or Poseidon had something against healing gigantic snake-with-chicken-wings bites.
The serpent leered over Percy, hissing like there was no tomorrow, and Percy stared dazedly into it's gaping mouth, filled with rows and rows of teeth like swords. He knew he should have been thinking about his impending death, but his fatal flaw was loyalty, and he found himself instead focusing on the fact that there was no way Jason had avoided being speared by those teeth when he got swallowed.
The Amphy still didn't strike. Maybe it was savoring the moment, maybe it was waiting for Percy to start screaming and swimming away. And Percy definitely tried to do both, but his head felt like a dumbbell, and he couldn't move. He just wanted to stay there, floating in the cool, soothing water...anyways, it would take a miracle to save him now, and he was pretty much out of those.
I guess this is where it ends Percy thought, as the Amphy bared its fangs at him, and struck.
I'm sorry Annabeth
And then a miracle happened.
As the Amphy came down at him, Percy suddenly heard the rumble of thunder, a sizzle, and felt the hairs on the back of his neck stand up. A white hot bolt of lighting shot down from the sky, and struck the Amphy right at the side, in the middle of one of the wings.
The serpent shrieked and hissed as it writhed around in pain from the crater in its belly, and Percy weakly tried to use the water to propel him away from the creature before it bashed him with its tail. He only managed to get a couple feet away before he blacked out.
