Chapter 14: Percy

It took some time for Percy to convince Annabeth that yes she had been half dead and in a coma for the past four hours, for Piper to assure her that yes the Clashing Rocks were a thing of the past, and for Jason to make her believe that yes, Percy had actually thought she would become a vampire.

Percy didn't appreciate the last one.

"Thanks Jason," he muttered, as Annabeth went off in another fit of giggles.

"You're such a Seaweed Brain," Annabeth laughed, "at least now I know that you were lying when you said that watching Twilight bored you to sleep,"

Percy's face burned,

"Nice to see you too," he said, with as much dignity as he could muster - which admittedly wasn't a whole lot.

After Annabeth had stopped breaking out into giggles, everyone told her what had transpired while she had been out in action, how relieved they were that she wasn't dead, how many tears had been spilt over her, etc. Percy started to choke up just remembering how he had felt during those horrible moments that he had actually believed  Annabeth had gone to Hades.

When they finished, Annabeth was looking extremely worried,

"This is bad," she murmured, half to herself - which Percy was pretty used to, "we've wasted an entire day on saving me - which is probably what Gaea wanted, but - "

"It doesn't matter," Percy interrupted, "the important part is that you're - you're not - " his voice broke on the last word. Annabeth's eyes suddenly glistened,

"Thanks Percy," she said quietly. Percy focused on her, and suddenly, he knew in a rush of emotion how much it meant to him that she was here, in front of him, alive. An asteroid could have struck the Earth at that moment, but he would still have been standing there, drinking in the sight of Annabeth.

And then of course Leo had to ruin it by giving a loud wolf-whistle.

"Leo, shut up!" Percy heard Piper hiss, "they're having a moment!"

"Yeah, well if this goes on," Leo snickered, "doomsday is going to come, Dirt Lady is going to destroy the world as we notice, and they'll still be having a 'moment'." As Annabeth constantly reminded him, Percy wasn't the most perceptive of people, but even he could detect an undercurrent of something other than sarcasm in Leo's voice. Regret? Sadness? Maybe a little longing? Percy had only known Leo a couple weeks, but that had been long enough for him to get that those emotions generally did not go with Leo.

Though come to think of it, Leo had been acting a little - a little out of character the past few days...

"You know what Piper?" Percy heard Leo ask. Leo was clearly doing his best to keep up the sarcastic tone, but Percy could definitely hear a note of bitterness now, "if they're gonna keep having their 'moment' and completely exclude the rest of us lowly demigods, I think we should leave them alone, huh?"

"Leo ...?" Hazel said nervously. She could hear it too.

"Come on, we haven't got all day!" Leo started to shoo everyone out like he was a shepherd, and soon enough, Percy and Annabeth were the only ones in the infirmary.

"Well that was...odd," Annabeth said finally.

"You're telling me," Percy agreed, "what's got his toga in a twist?"
