Chapter 20: Frank
It only took Frank seeing his friends waiting at the shrine for him to start feeling guilty. The scroll in his pocket seemed much heavier, weighing him down, and he felt like a bunch of hornets had decided to nest in his stomach. He couldn't believe he was having to keep such a big secret from them. Periclymus had told him to tell them all about the real meaning of the scroll and the sacrifice "when the time was right". The problem being that Frank didn't really have a good sense of time, and he was ninety percent sure he would mess it all up.
And then there was the fact that it just wasn't fair. Apparently he wasn't supposed to tell his friends so that they could keep clear heads and focus on the journey to Athens. Apparently, Periclymus hadn't cared too much about Frank having a clear head. His mind was buzzing, whirling around, a jumbled mess of thoughts and emotions.
Someone would have to die
Someone would have to die
Someone would have to die
The words echoed in Frank's head, bouncing crazily off the walls of his mind.
" - zoned out. Hello? Earth to Frank? Totally beast transformer extraordinaire?"
Frank blinked as his vision came into focus and he saw Leo waving a hand in front of his face.
"Huh?" He asked stupidly. Leo rolled his eyes..
"Prince Perry was just telling us where we could find a totally kick butt army."
Frank frowned. Maybe that meant he had zoned out during his discussion with Periclymus as well, because he couldn't remember anything about an army.
"I thought it better to discuss it with all four of you, as opposed to you explaining it to them." Periclymus said casually, as usual guessing exactly what Frank had been thinking.
"Thanks for the vote of confidence." Frank grumbled, and Periclymus appeared to suppress a smile.
"As I was saying," he said, "you have all proved yourselves to be truly the greatest demigods of this age. However not even the crew of the Argonauts - which I myself was a part of - could possibly hope to defeat the thousands of monsters that, even now, are mounting their attack on Athens, and then Mount Olympus, with only seven demigods."
"You think we haven't realized that?" Annabeth asked aggressively.
"I was just stating the fact," Periclymus said smoothly, "that you cannot do this on your own. You are depending on the daughter of Bellona, the son of Hades, and the satyr to bring the gods back to sanity, and the gods will help you against the giants and ultimately Gaea." Frank tried not to squirm to much at this reminder that he was withholding important information from his friends.
"This means that you must turn your attention to the army awaiting you at Athens," Periclymus continued, "And I believe I could help you with that. But - "
"Wait for it..." Leo muttered.
"I would request something in return."
"There it is!" Leo announced, and Periclymus grimaced in annoyance, but Frank thought Leo had a point. Immortals and spirits seemed to think that demigods only existed to do their dirty work.
