"Woollypaw, Crowpaw! Meet me in my den."
Both apprentices looked up from swatting at one another like jealous kits. Crowpaw, a thin black she-cat, sped off towards Brackenstar's den. Woollypaw, a fluffy gray tabby tom, scampered after her.
Once the three cats were settled in the rock den, Crowpaw and Woollypaw glaring at one another, Brackenstar opened his mouth to speak.
"I want to give you a word of warning--"
"Brackenstar, I don't know what you heard, but Crowpaw started it!"
Before Brackenstar could finish, Woollypaw cut him off with a sharp glare at his peer. Crowpaw hissed, tensing. Brackenstar observed the behavior with worried eyes. Crowpaw was the daughter of Dewclaw, who'd caused the former leader's - Havenstar's - death. He'd been killed shortly after, but the Clan still had a strong hatred for his kin.
"Woollypaw, shh. I've seen this behavior before - it does not lead to good things." Brackenstar thought back to when Dewclaw and her were only kits, playing in the nursery and sharing prey. Dewclaw had been thought down upon because of his rouge father, and it turned him into a murderer.
"Woollypaw scratched me!" Crowpaw spat, raising her forepaw to show a claw mark over her toes. Brackenstar stiffened, her gaze scanning over both apprentices. Woollypaw had a nick in her ear. The leader stiffened, recalling the time Dewclaw - Dewpaw, at the time - had given her a deep scatch on her shoulder while training. It had never healed, and now she had a scar there.
Woollypaw remained silent, but sent a harsh glare at Crowpaw.
"Both of you, listen. Do you remember the stories of Dewclaw and Havenstar?" she forced her words to keep steady as she spoke the cats' names.
"Dewclaw's my father!" Crowpaw raised her voice. Woollypaw spat, "And he killed Havenstar! He was a monster!" Brackenstar stiffened, prepared to see a fight break out before her. But, surprisingly, Crowpaw only hissed.
