"I am her fiancé. Let me see her!" Alistair shouted as the nurse tried to push him away from the doors of the emergency room.
"Please, you must understand that this is a serious matter and the doctor is doing all that he can." The nurse responded and as soon as she finished her sentence, the doctor came out of the emergency room.
He indicated the nurse to leave and gestured Alistair to follow him. Alistair was agitated and frightened but he remained firm because he had promised Anora that he would never whine or fret if she was harmed. He had promised that he would remain manly, no matter what happened. The doctor led him to his small office and closed the door once the two had entered.
"Mr Parker, you must sit down and listen to me carefully," said the doctor who was calmly seated on his chair and Alistair too sat on the chair in front of the desk, "Anora's brain has stopped functioning. We have put her on ventilation but the ventilator needs to be turned off within twenty four hours. There is nothing that can be done to prevent a brain death and you know that very clearly."
Alistair's lips quivered but his eyes did not shed even a single tear. His hope had become a thief who stole his tranquility and vanished into the air. What a treacherous act had his hope performed.
The doctor examined his expression and he was quite lost since it was impossible to read his face.
"We have a patient who is in need of a heart and since Anora's heart is working, we were thinking of donating it. That would be a kind deed from her for which she would be rewarded in heaven, and her family will definitely be proud of her."
Alistair sighed and stood up to walk up and down the room. His steps were slow but they highlighted his anguish. A line formed on his forehead which was a clear indication that he was growing old, growing weak and Anora had loved him when his face was young and charming. He would not allow a single wrinkle to appear on his face for the sake of Anora, thus his eyebrows straightened and he appeared to be calm.
"She has no family, no friends and no relatives. She only had me but she never realised it. I never spoke back to her and I never said anything behind her back. Making her happy was my only goal. Those who called themselves her friends were cold hearted liars but she never found out about them. Her brutal family had kicked her out of their house without knowing what she might face. She had once mentioned that she thought of a suicidal but someone had helped her overcome that suicidal and had inspired her to become what she is. This is her story, doctor. This is Anora McNair's story and today, the last chapter of her story is to be written. You can give her heart to the patient of yours because Anora would have liked to help someone in need. Besides, it would not even benefit her anymore."
As soon as he finished speaking, a melancholic silence fell into the room as the doctor approached him and held him by his shoulders. "You are brave." He told him and left the room in a hurry.
Alistair's legs shivered and he could not feel his arms. People come and go, but Anora was his first love and letting her go was one of the hardest things that he could have imagined of.
