That's what I think, precisely. Except, the accident has been claimed as a murder. Why? Easy, again. The murderer didn't get to the victim in time to kill her. Next best thing? Claim the accident as his own work and then disappear. Only, he didn't disappear.

I cannot tell, but he will be brought into the hands of Scotland Yard first thing tomorrow morning. Or should I say, he will turn himself in. He's a man who feels guilty about everything, no doubt he will feel guilty about this too.
