Dave's POV

All the color in Jake's face drains and he looks completely broken down. He then grabs Dirk's wrist and checks the pulse along with on Dirk's neck and then placing a hand where Dirk's heart would be. He slowly takes his hand off of Dirk's chest and hangs his head in defeat.

"Is there a pulse?" I hear Jade ask as she's over by the door.

Jake just shakes his head and the room goes quiet. Jade walks over to Jake and hugs him.

"M-maybe he's not dead. Maybe it's just the magic." Jade suggests and looks to me for support.

I honestly don't know but I know she wants me to say something comforting for Jake. "Yeah it's a total possibility."

"You can't just give up hope Jake, especially since you're the one always so full of it."

"R-right." Jake sits down next to Dirk and rests his hand on Dirk's. "God I hope you're right about it being just a spell."

I stand up and walk over to the door. "We can leave Dirk here. We should leave before they find us, we can camp out in the forest and come back in the morning."

"It'd be a smart thing to do, come on Jake."

Jake shakes his head. "I'm staying here. I'm not leaving Dirk alone."

I roll my eyes. "Look I get you love him and all but-" I'm cut off by Jade covering my mouth with her hand.

"That's fine Jake. I'm sure if you need to you can find us." Jade grabs my hand and drags me out the room closing the door behind us.

"What was that for?"

"We both know that there is a small fraction of a percent chance that this is due to magic. Dirk... Dirk is dead, let Jake think otherwise for a little bit."

I sigh and nod. "Okay, let's go find a place nearby to camp out then."

We walk over to the balcony that we jumped down on and I help Jade to the ground. The mansion is raised up from the ground so you can't just come out to the balcony and step down to the ground, no you have to jump and I didn't want Jade to hurt herself from jumping. We get far into the forest and we find a small clearing. I set up a fire and Jade sits next to me as it becomes pitch black besides the fire's glow.

"Dave?"

"What?"

"Are you okay?"

"No, no I'm really not. My big brother is... g-gone..." I silently start to sob into my hands when I feel two warm arms wrap around me.

"Shhhhh, Hey I know what it's like to lose someone. Just to let you know." Jade then lifts my head up and kisses me. "Just know that you'll never be alone."

Tears start streaming from her eyes as well as we lay in each other's arms. That night was the night I learned something. No matter where you are, no matter what you are, know that there is someone out there to hold, comfort and love you through hell and back.
