There was no one in detention except for us. Well, us and the teacher who was supervising the detention. But when the teacher told us he had to run to the teachers office it was just me and Ethan. I was still furious at him. Who does he think he is to call me a -
"Bitch," he mumbled.
"What is your problem?" I snapped.
"You are my problem, why couldn't you just stay out of it? You were supposed to stay out of it!"
"Oh and let you put him to a hospital? No thanks!"
He looked away.
"You're a real jerk Ethan. Did you know that?" I continued.
"Yeah you've told me about ten thousand times Bella, I think I've got it!" this time it was him snapping. "You know, everyone's life is not as perfect as yours! Some people have to deal with all kinds of shit."
"You don't think I have to deal with shit too? Everyone has some shit in their lives Ethan, doesn't give you an excuse to go around and beating people up! And excuse me for saying this but what shit do you have to deal with? You're Mr. Popular and you live in a big house and you're rich." I shouted.
"You don't know me," he mumbled and looked away.
That threw me off guard. I was expecting a bomb after my little speech.
"You're right, I don't." I said quietly.
Fall came and with it, fall break that would last for a week. Ethan and his friends were the same, got themselves in trouble, played with girls and ditched gym. I hadn't actually talked to Ethan at all for the past few weeks so I was really surprised when he approached me the day before fall break began.
I was getting out of my car and about to head to class when he came up to me.
"Hey," he had his usual charming yet annoying, irresistible look on his face.
"Um, hi." I grabbed my bag out of my car.
"You look nice," he said after a couple seconds of awkward silence.
I couldn't help but to laugh over the awkwardness of this conversation.
"Yeah thanks um, I thought we weren't talking," I said after I managed to control myself.
"We weren't. But now we are. And you look nice," he winked me and left. I laughed again.
Then the bell rang and I had to hurry to class.
The day passed like any other day. In chemistry Sam was quiet, math was boring, English was okay and Spanish was brilliant as usual but the highlight of the day was literature because we were watching Pride and Prejudice, the original film. We were also gonna watch the remake after we finished that one. I loved it.
When I got home I found Lizzy and Rosie in my room, playing with my makeup.
"Elizabeth what have I told you about messing with my makeup?" I said angry.
"I'm sorry but Rosie doesn't have a sister she just has a brother and he doesn't wear makeup that would be weird cause he's a boy and" she stopped to breathe "I just wanted to show her yours and then we started playing with it and -"
I started laughing. "Okay it's fine, calm down silly."
"So can we keep playing?"
"Please?" Rosie sent me a smile of an angel.
"As long as it doesn't interrupt my reading." I smiled. I really truly loved my sister.
When I had finished reading the chapter my literature teacher had told us to read over the break I went downstairs with the girls to help them turn on the TV. We walked past the kitchen and I saw dad cooking. I stopped. Dad couldn't cook. I got worried.
"Dad... Where's mom?" I asked him as I walked in the kitchen, the girls followed me.
"She's at a meeting, I'm trying to cook chicken." he frowned.
"My mom isn't home either, my brother is supposed to make food." Rosie said and frowned too.
"How old is your brother?"
"16." she smiled.
"Around Bella's age." he looked at me. "Maybe you can both eat with us?"
I froze. How awkward would that be?
"Um dad, are you sure that's a good idea? I mean, you can't cook." I tried to come up with an excuse.
"Maybe you can do the cooking tonight?" he asked me cheerfully.
I was gonna say no but he'd still invite Ethan whether I cooked or not. My cooking was the better alternative. I sighed.
"Sure." I said as the doorbell rang.
"That's probably Ethan coming to get me."
Dad answered the door and I heard him invite him inside to eat with us. Ethan appeared in the kitchen with a smirk on his face. I sighed again and continued cooking.
In the middle of the dinner dad got a text from mom.
"Shoot. Your mom's car has a flat tire."
"Doesn't she have a spare one?" I asked surprised.
"No, she needs me to bring one." he stood up and kissed me on the cheek. "Thanks for cooking sweetheart but I have to go." he tickled Lizzy who giggled.
"It's okay, I'll put the leftovers in the fridge."
"Thanks," he smiled to me. "Oh and I'll bring home some desert so make sure you stay for that." he said friendly to Ethan.
"No problem, sir." he said and winked me so dad didn't see. I rolled my eyes.
After dinner, when I was cleaning up, I heard someone come in the kitchen. I turned around and saw Ethan leaning in the doorway, watching me. I didn't know what to say so I just awkwardly continued cleaning up. I heard him chuckle. Next thing I knew he had wrapped his hands around my waist. I sighed.
"I really need to wash these dishes," I said.
"And?" he chuckled.
"And I can't do that if you keep touching me." I said determined.
He laughed and let go of me.
"I like your dad. He's a chill dude." he said after a while.
"Yeah, I know." I smiled.
"Wish my dad was like that." he looked up in the ceiling.
"Where's your mom?" I asked him suddenly.
He looked at me for a while as if he was wondering if he could trust me.
"She's at a help center for women." he said eventually.
"Oh, does she work there?" I asked curious.
"Something like that."
I saw there was something more to it, but I didn't ask.
"I better go." he said.
"Okay." I smiled friendly. He rolled his eyes and left the room. Asshole. I followed him.
"Rosie." he shouted up the stairs. "Rosie we're leaving. Now."
He turned to me. "Thanks for dinner."
"Ethan whatever-your-last-name-is is thanking me?" I pretended to be flattered. "Why, your welcome."
"Don't get used to it." he rolled his eyes. "And my last name is Baker, don't overuse it."
"Ethan Baker... I like it." I said as Rosie came running down the stairs.
I wasn't sure but I thought I heard him say something as he closed the door. It sounded like "I don't".
