It felt like forever, but I'm sure it only took about twenty or so minutes for me to calm down about the whole situation. It helped that Axl had been through this before and was basically just playing it by ear. I tried doing that too, and now that I guess that's what I stuck with. I mean, there's nothing we could do right now anyway. It's 3am.
"Do you think he's sleeping?" Axl asked from the other side of the small cell. Each of us had our legs spread out and touching one another's.
I looked over my shoulder to the officer who was supposed to be on duty for the night to watch us. He looked pretty out. I turned back to Axl and shrugged.
"I think he is," he said. I watched curiously as he scooted beside me. "That means we can talk about anything, now."
I glanced at him, my arms and legs crossed. "What are you saying? What do you want to talk about?"
"Anything. If you got something you wanna tell me, this would be the time."
"Well, I don't."
"I'm sure you do. Just think about it."
Perhaps I did. The night in the studio was still bothering me, of course, and now could be the last and only time to talk about it. I hope I won't regret bringing it up.
"Okay," I paused and as his eyes met mine something inside me did a backflip. "I want to talk about--"
"In the studio the other night? Yeah, you never actually responded to what I said, you know, before you left and then came back in handcuffs--"
"Yeah, yeah, I got it." But I didn't say anything.
"Well?" Axl asked, impatient.
"I don't know," I said quietly, sorting through all the contrasting emotions in my head.
"Well here's my opinion, okay? I sort of seduced you--and I'm aware of that--but by bringing you to that piano, I really did want to learn to play, but God were you ever cute when you played..." Axl smiled wide, revealing straight, white upper teeth, "you just get so into it and your eyebrows get all-- never mind. Anyway, I never wanted to hurt you, and I didn't want to ruin our friendship, either. That moment, as I was kissing you... I realized what was missing from Rocket Queen. You. You're part of our story, now, Cass. I knew there was something I needed to add into the song, and I knew how I felt about you... But if you want to be on the record or something in another way..."
"No," I said.
"No?"
"That's really sweet, Axl. I'm fine with it. Just... don't credit me for it, if that's okay. If my family finds out... they wouldn't be mad or anything,"--I chuckled, and he did a bit, too--"it would just be awkward, you know?"
Axl nodded, and it felt like my chest expanded in a euphoric ode of contentment. I sighed, pleased with where this conversation--and entire night--ended up going.
I decided to take advantage of the fact that we were on a high note and lay my head on his chest, scooting over so my side pressed against his, resting my arm on his toned chest. Much to my relief, he circled his arm around my shoulders with a small sigh. No one said anything. The only sounds filling the space were cars zipping up and down the road, sometimes blasting music and sometimes people walking by or yelling. It wasn't peaceful, but being with Axl made it enjoyable.
We stayed like that momentarily, until Axl spoke again and completely ruined the moment. "Hey, so I heard what your aunt said about--"
"You were listening to my conversation?" I said, exasperated, and really looked at him, a pointed, annoyed glare. I knew it.
