"Who the fuck is this Lauren?" I heard an unfamiliar voice spit out.
I was regaining consciousness but I wasn't sure quite why.
"Leave her alone Alec, I swear I'll fucking kick your ass if you hurt her." Lauren growled back more ferociously.
"Calm down babe." The same voice spoke again.
"Don't call me that."
Now I remembered why I was regaining consciousness. I got knocked on the floor whilst looking at the painting. I'm guessing this was the man that did the damage.
"Look she's waking up. Sleeping beauty, huh?" The voice teased.
"Camila," Lauren softly prodded me on the shoulder whilst ignoring Alec's comment. "Camila, are you okay."
I opened my eyes to see Lauren standing in front of me, now smiling.
"What's going on?" I spoke softly. My head was pounding extremely hard.
"Oh god Lauren, don't tell me she hasn't got a clue about what's going on." Alec scoffed.
I was now more confused than ever, and frankly quite terrified.
"Camila this is going to be very confusing to you so you have to hear me out," I nodded, prodding for her to carry on. "I haven't been completely honest about who I am exactly."
"Spit it out Lauren. We don't have a lot of time." Alec said rudely.
"Don't fucking rush me," Lauren growled once again through gritted teeth, causing Alec to throw his hands up in defence. Seeing Lauren act like this excited me but also scared the hell out of me. "Basically, when I was younger I got involved with some people who I shouldn't have because I was in need of some money. I was just a street drug dealer at first and I was making a great profit, not to forget I was being well 'looked after'. Then I started to import heavy loads of cocaine into the country from going over the Mexico boarder," I nodded my head whilst Lauren explained, still trying to process all this new information. "Anyhow, I was blackmailed into doing something a lot more...well sketchy."
"A hitman." Alec interfered causing Lauren to shoot a hard death glare in his direction.
I was utterly shocked. A hitman? But Lauren couldn't be, could she?
"I didn't want to do it Camila believe me, I had to I was forced into it."
"Why am I here Lauren?" I said more sternly, despite the fact I was absolutely dreading what she may do to me.
"You're a target Camila."
When those words left her mouth I could barely breathe.
"So you're going to kill me? Was that the plan Lauren, to just kill me?" I asked, tears running down my cheek whilst I shook with fear.
"No Camila, I'm not going to kill you. I wouldn't dream of it."
"I don't understand."
"Your family, they're rich. Filthy rich, am I right?" I nodded slightly, completely clueless on how she knew about my family when I never told her about their money. "My boss is after your family and their money. They asked me to scope you out to get more information." Lauren said, feeling ashamed
"So that's why you were always watching me at the club. For months," Lauren slightly nodded, looking down at her feet. "I can't believe you Lauren. I thought you were my friend."
"Camila, I couldn't go through with it. As soon as I got to know you I couldn't do it. I wouldn't be able to live with myself if I-" Lauren stopped in her tracks and the room grew quieter. "If I killed you." She finally added.
"Where's my parents?" I ignored what Lauren just said even though it hit me extremely hard. She was going to kill me.
"My boss has them, but he can't access the money they have."
"Why?"
"Because they need you."
"What? Why me?" So many thoughts were rushing around my head making me feel more nauseous with each passing moment.
"You have the code." Lauren uttered.
"My parents have never gave me a code. They'd never trust me with their money, not in a million years."
"My boss has told me that you have the code, your parents have admitted it. If he doesn't get it within 48 hours he'll come looking for you himself, so that's why we need to run away. This instance." Lauren was speaking so fast that I was finding it very difficult to keep on track of what she meant.
"I don't know what code you mean. But I can't just get up and run away and you know I can't. What about school? Or Janet? She isn't back yet, she'll have no clue where I've gone. Lauren you can't ask me to do this."
"Well, it's either you stay here and get tortured and killed by my boss or you come with me and have more of a chance of surviving." Lauren spoke in a more slow tone so I could understand.
I was completely torn. I would surely be killed if I stayed here but I have so much to lose: my college education, Janet, my job, but I guess the most important one was my life.
"Do I have time to pack a few things and leave a note to Janet?" I asked after a few moments of deep thought. Lauren and Alec both stared at eachother.
"Yes, but we have to be quick. We need as much time as possible to go as far as we can." Alec spoke with Lauren nodding her head in agreement alongside him.
"Wait, you're coming too?" I questioned the man I had no clue about. He had never been mentioned in conversation before and I had never actually seen him around.
"Yeah I am, problem?" The man shot back cockily. He was probably around middle/late 20s, he had medium-length dark brown hair which was messily styled. He also had some stubble which covered the bottom half of his face. Something about him didn't feel right, I caught really negative vibes from him and I didn't know why. It may be just because he's extremely rude and full of himself though.
"Enough, Alec. She's facing enough problems already without you being snarky." Lauren defended me, which felt so good. I flashed a small smile at her causing her to smile back.
"Okay, I'm sorry." Alec half-heartedly apologised, I could tell he didn't mean it but accepted it anyway since it wasn't my main worry at that moment.
"Camila we should go to yours now before we lose even more time," Lauren said, whilst ushering me towards the door of her basement (I assumed since it felt like it should be allocated the bottom of the house). "Are we good to go Alec?"
"Yep, let's make a move."
