"Cody." Kenobi said.
"A friend of yours?" Ezra asked, stepping forward.
Cody narrowed his eyes in a hostile manner directed at Ezra. Owen, if that were truly his name, frowned at the clone."Yes, he is." Owen answered Ezra's question. "This is Commander Cody."
Cody snapped out of his odd behavior and gave them a lopsided grin. Ezra got the feeling there was no sincerity in the act. It was false just like his friend 'Owen'.
"Well," Kenobi began, "The lot of us could all use some help."
"Perhaps we should stick together?" He suggested, glancing at Qui-Gonn.
The Jedi Master nodded in agreement."I believe that would be wise."
Ezra wanted to argue, but thought better of it. They couldn't very well learn anything about the two men if they sent them away. He had finally decided that Owen really was an older version of Obi-Wan. Why he'd lied about his identity was a mystery to Ezra, though it wouldn't remain that way for long. The younger Obi-Wan didn't show any recognition when he looked at his older self. Ezra sighed quietly, this was fast becoming a disaster. People from multiple timelines, time periods showing up at random. Blast, this wasn't going to end well for anyone, Ezra thought.
Cody, accompanied by Qui-Gonn left to return to the ship while the two Kenobis, and R4, stayed with Ezra. The three would continue searching for an inhabited sinkhole. Ezra didn't know what species inhabited the planet and was mildly excited to see them.
As they were passing a sinkhole, Ezra caught sight of a narrow trail leading down into the hole."Hey, I think I see a trail uphead." Ezra announced, pointing.
The other two glanced in the direction he was pointing.
Though it was barely visible they saw it as well and changed direction accordingly. R4 warbled angrily because of the rough surface he was being forced to cross."More like a death trail." Young Obi-Wan murmured as he stopped at the beginning of the trail.
It was no more than a strip of horizontally flat rock gradually going down and around the sinkhole in a spiral pattern. In places the rock had eroded, leaving little room for a grown man to maneuver. The typical way of getting in and out of the sinkhole was via spacecrafts or the native riding creatures."There doesn't seem to be another way. We're rather pressed for time anyways." Ezra said.
"Alright." Obi-Wan agreed with some reluctance.
The older Kenobi elected to go first, then the younger, and Ezra last. Just as they were preparing the treacherous descent, someone shouted.
Ezra jerked his head up in the direction the shout had come from. Cody, armed with a blaster, was charging straight towards him. Behind him was Qui-Gonn, yelling indistinguishable warnings.
Too late Ezra understood what he was saying. A blaster bolt caught him in the shoulder, spinning him around. Kenobi caught him and dragged him down the trail a ways to provide cover. Younger Obi-Wan scrambled after them as a shower of blaster bolts streaked through the air above his head. R4 rolled hastily out of the blaster bolts path, having been left above."What the frak is going on?" Older Kenobi exclaimed.
"I thought you said he was your friend!" His younger self hollered.
Any response the older Obi-Wan had come up with was cut off as Cody appeared above them. With cat like reflexes Kenobi grabbed the lightsaber clipped to his younger self's belt and activated its blade. Cody's face harden as he pulled back the trigger on his blaster. Kenobi deflected the bolt of energy back at Cody, catching him in the chest plate. With a pained growl Cody reeled backwards before regaining his balance. Seeing Qui- Gonn had nearly reached them, Cody began to run. The older Jedi didn't bother to chase him, more concerned with the well being of his Padawan.
Ezra pushed himself to his feet, leaning on the side of the sinkhole. He glanced between the two Kenobis wondering what would happen now that the truth was obvious.
The older Obi-Wan deactivated the lightsaber and tossed it back to his younger self. The latter didn't say anything as he clipped the lightsaber back to his belt. Qui-Gonn appeared above them were Cody had been previously. His hair was in disarray and a smudge of blood stained his mustache. Dust covered his robes on the shoulders, knees and back. No doubt Cody had caught him off guard on their way to the cargo ship. Why he was doing this Ezra had no idea, but he did know they had to stop Cody. Before one of them ended up dead."We should head back to the ship." Qui-Gonn said.
The younger Obi-Wan helped Ezra to walk. It was merely a flesh wound he had sustained, though it hurt like brix all the same. Their pace was quicker than before as lives possibly hung in the balance. Ezra didn't believe Cody was the type of person to do something like this, not without a good reason.
As the damaged cargo ship came into view, the roar of repulsors on a spaceship filled the air. For a moment Ezra thought they were saved until he realized it was Master Clee Rhara in a starfighter. She landed a few meters off from Ra'Lu's ship, throwing up a cloud of dust. Her regal figure strode towards the motley Jedi group with an unreadable expression."Master Jinn." Master Rhara greeted coldly.
He gave her a curt nod in response."I have orders to escort the boy, Bridger, and your Padawan back to the Jedi Temple." She said quickly.
"Clee- " Qui-Gon began.
A blaster bolt struck Master Rhara in the thigh, her cry of pain ending the previous conversation. Qui-Gonn surged forward to catch her before she fell to the ground.
Standing beside the cargo ship was Cody holding a pistol blasters in each hand. Ra'Lu laid on the ground at his feet with blood trickling from her hairline."Cody!" Kenobi shouted, taking a step forward.
"Stay back!" Cody shouted back.
"Why are you doing this?" Kenobi asked, his voice cracking.
He thought Cody was his friend, not his enemy. What sort of sick dream was this?
Ezra was equally confused. Everything had taken a big turn for the worse and he didn't understand why. Before now he had more or less been on the right track to finding what had caused the time travel.
Wait.
Not Kenobi. He was just a clue."I'm doing this for you, Obi-Wan!" Cody replied, his voice full of frustration.
"You'll die if I don't." He added more calmly.
Cody. That was it! It was Cody. Cody had messed with time somehow. Ezra was filled with relief and fear. He had his answer on how to solve this problem, but at what cost?
