Chapter One
Zack's P.O.V.
I woke up to the screeching sound of my alarm. I slammed the button a little too hard and the clock fell off of the nightstand. I was lucky that it didn't hit the picture of Andy and the gang that I had. I looked at the picture a little longer, focusing on Andy. She was wearing a red polka dot bikini that day. It was so hard not to trip over myself. I sighed and stood up.
After staring for a moment longer, I realized that this was the last day of school before spring break. "Great time to come back to school," I thought to myself. I got in the shower and then brushed my teeth. After that, I put on a black T-shirt, a pair of dark blue jeans, and my black Converse. I grabbed a piece of bread and popped it in the toaster. After it was done, I was out the door and onto the bus.
I hated taking the bus. It was always so loud that you couldn't hear yourself think. I used to like it when I sat with Andy, but she started walking which didn't make any sense with me. I sat there listening to everything around me, hearing the latest gossip, and the blaring radio. When the ride was finally over and we got to the bus loop, I dashed to front and was the first one off. I checked my watch and saw that school was going to be starting in ten minutes.
I walked inside and started toward my locker. I turned the corner with a little too much force and I bumped into a girl. I was left standing, obviously, but to my surprise, she was too. "Great way to start off the day," I thought to myself. I sighed and looked down at her. She had brown hair and blue eyes. She had on black framed glasses, a purple T-shirt, and light blue jeans. She was looking around as if looking for someone.
She finally looked at me, not checking me out surprisingly. I smirked anyway, and she rolled her eyes. She seemed to focus on my leather jacket for a second before looking away. She smiled sweetly and turned around to walk away.
"I'm Skye. Skye Hart. What's your name?" she asked not facing me, still looking for someone else.
"Zack, the new kid," I answered. I knew that she would see me differently if she found out I was suspended and just got back. For such a stupid reason too.
"Nice to meet you. I would love to show you around, but if you don't mind, I have to run. Calculus starts soon, not that it matters to a boy like you." she said. I nodded, not wanting to seem like a jerk, then watched as she hurried off to class.
I hadn't seen her before, but I remembered hearing her name. I just didn't remember where. I had study hall next period, but I hardly studied. I went to the library and got on one of the computers. I clicked on the search bar and typed in Skye Hart. 1 result came up. It was a student report written by the school district. According to the website, she had maintained a 4.0 GPA all throughout her life, got early acceptance to Harvard and Yale, but didn't have any before or after school activities and wasn't in any clubs. She was also fluent in French and Spanish.
I clicked out of the link and sat there for a minute. I thought about it. Usually girls like that are shy, but she wasn't. She didn't fall when we clashed either. She was a straight A student, fluent in Spanish and French, and she was going to a very prestigious school the next year. I walked outside to the bleachers and walked under them where all my friends were hanging out.
"Hey guys, have you ever heard of a girl named Skye Hart?" I asked.
"Yeah. I have history with her in fourth period. She's a total goodie two shoes. She does whatever the teacher says, turns in her homework on time, passes every test, and does all the extra credit assignments. I swear that girl doesn't have a bad bone in her body," James said.
"She is in my English class. same thing. Total teachers pet. I don't even know how it's possible to be that perfect," Sasha added.
"Why do you ask?" Andy asked. She furrowed her eyebrows as she spoke. She was usually very quiet so this was out of the ordinary for her.
"I bumped into this morning and didn't remember seeing her anywhere. That's all," I answered.
"She's in like three of your classes. Spanish, Science, and Gym. Obviously you didn't look at the top five list of the school," Sam said.
"Really? They have a top five list?" I asked.
"Yup," Sam confirmed.
I said thanks and walked back inside. The passing bell rang and the kids started flooding out of their classes. I had Spanish this period. I walked to Mrs.Rodriguez's room and took my seat. I looked around the classroom and noticed Skye in the back right corner by the window. How could I have not noticed her before?
Just then, the teacher walked in and asked us all to take our seats. She took attendance and sat down at her desk. All of us were here, but she was shocked upon seeing my face.
"Ok. Everyone open up to page 49," she said.
All the pages made sound as they turned and then there was a silence once again. Mrs.Rodriquez looked around as she pulled out a stick and looked at Skye.
"Skye, please read the first paragraph in Spanish," she said.
Mrs. Rodriquez put on her reading glasses and looked down at the book. Skye stood up and started to read.
"Hace mucho tiempo, las mujeres vieron a un pequeño niño llorando. Estaban preocupados , así que fueron a ver cómo estaba . Le preguntaron qué le pasaba, pero el niño no respondió. Ellos preguntaron de nuevo , y esta vez el muchacho dijo que estaba perdido," she said. Then she sat back down.
"Perfect Ms.Hart. Thank you. Now who wants to read it in English?" Mrs. Rodriquez asked the class.
It was so quiet that I swear I heard crickets chirping. Mrs. Rodriquez sighed. She pulled another stick from the jar.
"Zack, would you please read for us?" she asked. I groaned, but stood up anyway. The other kids laughed at my misfortune, but I shot them a look and they shut up.
"Long ago, women found a boy crying. They were concerned, so they went to check on him. They asked what was wrong, but the child didn't respond. They asked again, and this time, the boy said he was lost," I read.
"Good. Now, our assignment for today is that you make an inference about the next part of the book. It's due by the end of class and it's an independent project. Any questions?" asked Mrs. Rodriquez.
Skye raised her hand high, although her face showed no interest. The teacher sighed and pointed to her.
"Yes Ms.Hart?" she asked.
"If you have already read the book, would you still prefer us to write an inference or do you think otherwise?" Skye asked.
"No, that would be pointless. If you have read it, please write a summary instead of an inference. Also, after you're done, please find a partner. Your next assignment is a book report on this book. It's due next Friday, whether you have read it or not" Mrs. Rodriguez answered.
Skye nodded and began to write immediately. Her face looked focused. I watched for a few minutes, taking in all of her features. I was mesmerized, but then remembered the assignment. I turned back around and started writing. I predicted that the boy was a descendent of royalty and the women would be treated to a feast. That wasn't what I really thought, but the teacher likes stupid stuff like that. I actually thought that the boy was a trap and the women would be lead to an abandon house and never be seen again.
A/N: Hey guys!!! What did you think of the first chapter? I couldn't sleep so I wrote some of this story and it's literally 5:33 a.m. right now.
