Chapter Sixteen

Zack's P.O.V.

I sat there against the door thinking about anything that I could do. Before I knew it though, I was fast asleep on the floor. My sleep was dark, blissful, and dreamless.

When I woke the next morning, my back was killing me. I rolled over and stretched out everything and took some painkillers. After my back started to feel better, I made some pancakes and eggs for breakfast.

I looked at the clock and it was eleven thirty already. Skye was going to be over in half an hour. I went upstairs and got ready. My family was already awake so that was nice. My mom gave me a worried look about last night and I ignored it.

"Hey guys, Skye is coming over in twenty minutes and please no embarrassment," I pleaded. She put on a fake smile and looked at Sadie. They both laughed for real and I rolled my eyes. I went into the kitchen and started to make lunch. I made some grilled cheeses with a fruit salad. I set the table and checked the clock again. It was exactly noon. I sat down in the living room while mom and Sadie played princess in Sadie's room. I sat there waiting, when I realized that from a third party perspective I would have looked desperate. My stomach started to turn and I knew that I was getting nervous.

I turned on the TV to distract me and drank some water to feel better. A few minutes in and I already knew that it wasn't working. I turned off the TV and checked the clock again. Twelve forty five. I took my phone out of my pocket and checked my inbox. One new message. I clicked on it and it was from Skye.

"Help me" it read. My heart stopped. I raced up the stairs and to my room pacing my worried looking mother. I locked myself inside and checked my email. One new message, from Melissa.

"Looks like you made the wrong choice. Sorry not sorry, but I warned you. Your friend isn't going to make it to lunch. Try anything and you might not make it out alive." and that was it. It confirmed my worst fear. Shoot. Why did I care about her so much?

"Because you love her you idiot," the voice in my head said. No, I just met her.

"Yes because you watch fashion shows, stalk people, skip class, and make lunch for every stranger you meet," it sarcastically snapped. Wow someone was in a mood. I was snapped out of my thoughts when a new message popped up on my screen. I clicked the message expecting it to be from Melissa. It was actually from Andy.

"Meet me at the park tomorrow at three. We need to talk." it read. I stood up and raced out of the house. I ran all the way to the studio and basically plowed down the door. It was empty. Everything was gone including the people. It was an empty warehouse. I felt a pang in my chest. I was having a panic attack. My breathing quickened and my vision started to blur.

"No Zack. You can't save Skye from a hospital bed. Plus no one will find you here,"my inner voice was in a bad mood today, but it had a point. I snapped out of my panic by focusing on the letters on the door of the warehouse. I ran. I didn't know where I was going, but I was listening to my heart and letting it guide me.

I made some turns and went down some alleyways, and eventually I ended up in an alley behind a nightclub. I didn't know if it was where I was supposed to be, but I went inside anyway. There was tons of people dressed in black and some were in fist fights. I looked around and finally saw Skye. She didn't look like she needed any help though.

She was in a fight with the others and she was winning. I walked out and started helping anyway. Taking people down one by one. I looked over at Skye again. One of the guys had pinned her against the wall. He was ready with a death punishing blow. She struggled for a moment but just as I was walking over, she pulled off a stiletto she was wearing and stabbed the guy in the eye. He huddled over and she knocked him out with a kick. Before I knew it, the only two people left were me and her.

She walked up to me and hugged me. I hugged her back and my heart skipped a beat.

"No one has ever broken into a gang hideout to fight off thugs for me before. Thank you," she said. I smiled.

"No girl that I know has ever needed me to," I replied. I looked into her eyes and they sparkled. She was still holding my shoulders and I was still holding her waist.

I leaned a little closer, and she seemed to do it automatically. We looked into each others eyes a little longer. We both moved a little closer. We were less than an inch apart and I could feel her breath.

Clap, clap, clap. We both looked over and sprung away from each other.
