Chapter Three
Zack's P.O.V.
I walked back to class and handed the hall pass back to Mrs.Fox. I took my seat and worked on the problems until the bell rang. I was never the best at math, but these problems seemed more difficult than I thought. It took me what seemed like forever to finish ten problems. I still had 12 to do by the time class was over. I grabbed my stuff and walked out of class. I saw Skye walking to Gym. I didn't bother to catch up because we had to change into our gym clothes so there wasn't any time to talk. I went straight into the men's locker room and got changed. When I got into the gymnasium, I looked around for the teacher, but only found a substitute and a ton of kids.
"Ok class. Here's the deal, I was called a the last minute and I don't have a lesson plan, so today is a free day and you all get 100% for the day as long as you don't tell Coach Brown," she said.
The class cheered and I walked over to Skye. She was sitting on the basketball ball cart reading. She was beautiful. When I got close, she closed the book immediately, same one as in spanish.
"What's up?" I asked.
"Nothing much. I'm just waiting for gym to be over. I hate this class, but I have to get good grades," she said. I nodded not wanting to pry.
"Read anything interesting in the library? Non-fiction maybe?" I questioned.
"Blah, no. I hate non-fiction. It's the worst kind of book, my mortal enemy even. I despise that genre," she said. I nodded, but I knew it wasn't true.
That was weird. I saw her reading a nonfiction book with my own two eyes. She had to be lying about something, but which part was she lying about? I asks for a bathroom pass and the sub gave me one.
I walked down to the library again and went to the desk. I asked for the book by title, but the librarian said they they don't carry that book. She looked it up, but still nothing. That was even stranger. Skye said that she hated nonfiction, but I saw her reading two nonfiction books today. The library doesn't have it, so that means that she brought it herself. Why would she have a book from a genre that she hated?
I walked back to Gym and started to play basketball to get my mind off of it. I just met this girl today and she is all the sudden on my mind all the time. I passed the ball and then walked off to get water. The sub dismissed us early and I went to change.
After the bell rang, it was lunch time. I walked into the cafeteria to find Skye. I was going to ask her about everything. There had to be a perfectly normal, good explanation. I looked around, but I didn't see her. I gave up after two minutes and sat with Andy and the guys.
"Hey. Have you guys seen Skye?" I asked.
"Yeah. I just saw her go outside," Sam said.
I nodded. I stood up to go leave, but Andy grabbed my arm. Andy was never straightforward and was very passive, so this was a shock to me. I glanced at everyone and they were just as shocked as me. I looked down at her and her eyes were still on the table. The she suddenly stood up and looked me in the eyes which was also odd because she always avoided eye contact with me.
"Can I talk to you?" she whispered.
"Sure," I said eager to find out what was going on. I followed her into one of the empty classrooms and I turned on the lights.
"Why are you so into this girl all of the sudden?" she asked. A blush creeped its way onto her cheeks and a mix of hurt and something else flashed through her eyes, but her guard quickly went up before I could figure it out.
"What do you mean?" I asked as I wondered where this was coming from.
"You didn't even know her name three hours ago and now she is all you care about. You came to see us twice today, and both times were to talk about this girl!" she said angrily.
I opened my mouth to talk, but she cut me off.
"If you don't cut ties with Skye, I will never speak to you again. It's me or her. Who do you chose?" she asked.
"Why do I have to choose?" I asked defensively. She shook her head with a dark chuckle.
"I think that answers my question. Enjoy hangin' 'round with Skye," she said. Then she tried to walk away, but I grabbed her arm this time. She stopped, and I felt her breathing hitch. I turned her around to face me. She looked down. I put my hand under her chin and made her look at me.
"We have been friends like forever. Why are you acting this way? You're different. You're passive, you're funny, why are you being so hostile?" I asked. I expected her to run away, like she always did, but instead she blinked once, then twice, then three times.
"Come on, I know you too well for you to tell me you're fine. What's wrong?" I asked. She laughed. A tear fell from her cheek.
'What's wrong' was certainly the stupidest question. I was about to give up, but she closed the gap between us and connected our lips. I was in shock and didn't know what to do. It wasn't my first kiss, but something about this didn't feel right. I had liked her for five years in elementary and junior high, but she turned me down. What changed? Then she pulled away.
"Because I want to be more than just friends, and that doesn't mean your little sister," she said as more tears pricked at the corners of her eyes. Then she walked away, and I didn't physically stop her. I just spoke.
"You knew that I liked you. You said that you would never date me. That I was like a big brother to you. Why now? Why after I moved on to a new girl?" I asked. After I did, I realized that I said a new girl. There was no one that I liked, why did say that? Oh well.
She didn't turn around, just stood there. She took a deep breath, then turned slowly around to meet my gaze, tears staining her cheeks.
"Sam. She liked you first. She made me promise not to tell you how I felt because she knew that she wouldn't have a chance if you had me as an option," she said frowning.
Wow, if she felt that way for long, I was completely oblivious. I stood there, dumbfounded, having no idea what to think, but I soon snapped out of it. I thought about Sam. How she was my first kiss and how she confessed to me in the most romantic way possible. A blush came to my face at the thought.
I wasn't sure what just happened, but I knew that Andy probably just needed time to cool. I walked out to the bleachers to think for a minute, but I saw Skye sitting there. Once she heard my footsteps, she looked up at me.
