Chapter Twenty Four
Skye's P.O.V.
I opened my eyes when the sun poured through my curtains and into my room. I sighed and rubbed the sleep out of my eyes. I walked over to the bathroom brushing my teeth and hopping in a quick shower before drying my hair and throwing it into a high ponytail. I walked over to my drawer and threw on a fitted red v-neck t-shirt and some dark-wash blue jeans.
I looked in the mirror and smiled at the way I looked. I put on some mascara and some chapstick before slipping on my black converse. I walked down the stairs meeting my dad's gaze. He was staring into space, looking at nothing in particular, with a blank look on his face.
"Umm, you okay dad?" I asked. His attention snapped to me, as if he didn't know I was there before. He shook his head as if clearing his thoughts.
"Yeah, I'm fine," he said in a rather discombobulated tone. My expression fell and I sat down at the table next to him.
"That's a lie. Tell me what's going on dad," I said. He looked up at me, his eyes like glass, so fragile.
"There's a merger going on at the company, and they needed to downsize," he stated.
"They didn't...did they?" I asked. He nodded. My heart fell and my mind started going wild about bills and money. I smiled to reassure him, even though I didn't feel like smiling. I reached forward and gave him a hug.
"You'll get a new job dad. You're great at what you do. Why don't we start job hunting tomorrow?" I asked praying that my voice didn't crack. He nodded and I sighed. I grabbed my mp3 player and my earbuds.
I stood up and walked over to the door and popped my earbuds in as I walked outside. The breeze brushed up against my face and I took a deep breath. The music from my mp3 played through my head, and I matched my footsteps to the beat, letting the breeze carry me. One step after another, I ran, escaping my thoughts.
I opened my eyes, finding myself at Chase's studio. I sighed and walked in. None of the fighters would be around till late, so I was alone. I walked up to the bag and started to hit. My punches synced with the music.
"How are we gonna pay for the house? The car? What about school?" the thoughts ran through my head. I threw off my shirt, leaving me in my sports bra and jeans. I switched from the punching bag to the weight lifting station. Once I was tired, I stood up and walked to my stuff. I used one of the clean towels that was hanging on the wall to wipe away my sweat before throwing my shirt back on.
"Nice job," A woman's voice said from behind me. I spun around meeting a woman's gaze. Her eyes were blue, but dull. Her hair was dark and straight. I opened my mouth to speak, but closed it soon after.
"You don't have to say anything. I have a proposal for you," she said. My brows furrowed, but I didn't stop her. I just took a drink of my water and swung my towel over my shoulders.
"Here at the club, there is a no girls policy, but we're all about breaking policy. How about this, you fight for us," she said as more of a command then a question.
"What's in it for me?" I asked trying to sound cool although not really considering her offer. She smirked.
"We give big paychecks to the winners," she said. My heart skipped, I needed the money.
"How much?" I asked nonchalantly.
"We'll get to that when you win sweetheart. For now, you train," she said directing me to the bag once more.
"I'm done here," I said. I had to get on my way home before the guys showed up, but I wasn't going to tell her that.
"You'll be back. They always come back. Your first match is tomorrow night. Be here at nine, and be ready," she said. I nodded in her direction before starting the run home.
I reached the front porch to my house at noon, and I was nonstop thinking about the girl, the match, and the money. I walked inside, going upstairs and showering before getting dressed again. My phone buzzed on my bed and I looked at the contact.
Zack: Good Morning
I sighed. I didn't know what to say. 'Hey Zack, I hope you don't mind that I went out with Chase recently, I just had to see what it would be like' didn't exactly have a ring to it. I pulled up the keyboard, and my fingers seemed to type on their own.
Me: Morning Dyssodia
I had hit send before I knew it, and I instantly regretted it. I had accidentally chosen to play it cool, as if I didn't go out with my ex-boyfriend and join a fight club. I sighed and flopped back on my bed. My phone buzzed again and I jolted up.
Zack: Whatcha up to?
Me: Same thing as everyday, laying in bed
Zack: Haha, I never left
Me: Very funny
Zack: You know you love me
Me: What are you up to?
Zack: Talking to my favorite person in the whole world :)
Me: Your sister?
Zack: Nope.
Me: Your mom?
Zack: Wrong again
Me: Andy?
Zack: You're horrible at this game, it's you silly.
Me: Aww that was sweet
Zack: I try
I smiled and slipped my phone into my back pocket. I grabbed my purse and headed down the stairs and across the street.
A/N: Should Skye tell Zack? SHould she join the fight club to help out her dad? Whats going to happen next? Thanks for reading and don't forget to vote, comment, and share.
