Chapter Ten
Zack's P.O.V.
I woke up the next morning and looked at the new clock I had bought to replace the old one. It was 12:17 and I groaned. Needed more sleep, but wasn't tired enough. I stood up being hit with the cold air from the outside world. Part of me wanted to go back and curl up in my blanket cocoon, but the other told me to get up and do stuff. I looked outside and saw that the rain was pouring down hard.
I pulled out my laptop and looked at my lock screen. It read 'Life is what happens when you're computer's charging,' and that made me chuckle. Before I did anything, I pulled out my phone and checked my messages. My inbox was empty. That was weird. I logged in and checked my email. My inbox was empty all but one message. It said it was from an old friend. I opened it and began to read.
"It's been too long Zack. Apparently so long, that you forgot how to fight. You're lucky I saved you last night, or you would've been toast. What were you doing in town anyway? Coming back to the club? That's great. We really need you now. I think you will find that it's in your best interest to come back, or your new friend might just see some of our guys. They are eager to meet her. See you there. Love xMx" it read. It was a way to get me back. I knew that I couldn't show it to the police, because then they would know about the club and all past members would be arrested including me.
I sighed and turned on the video again. When I looked closer, I realized that it was Melissa. Shoot. What the heck had I just gotten myself into? I walked to my door and took a deep breath. Thas wasn't going to be fun. One of my best friends was in love with me, Skye was on my mind and I needed to do some more searching about her, and now she is being threatened by Melissa if I don't go back to the club. On top of that, I had to tell all of that to my mom so that she could call my dad and see if that couldn't be fixed.
The first time I joined was to help pay for the bills when Sadie was born. I was in the club for five years, then I got arrested when I was caught in the club fighting. I was there for a few weeks until they had to let me go because they found out that the evidence had been tampered with so the had no proof to hold me anymore. I just got out and started going to school again, and Sadie was old enough to start asking questions as to where I was if I was taken again. I couldn't go back now.
I walked across the hallway to my mom's room. I took another deep breath and knocked. I heard her moving around, but I didn't think she heard me.
"Mom, I need to talk to you. It's important," I said. I heard footsteps come to the door, and then she opened it. She was smiling, but then she saw my expression and her face dropped.
"Honey, what's going on, what's wrong?" she asked suddenly worried.
"It's the club," I said and she slammed the door pulling me into the room.
"What did they say to you?" she asked more serious than ever before.
"They said that they would hurt someone that I care about if I don't come back," I explained.
"Zack, listen carefully, whatever happens, I will protect you. I need to call your father. Give me some time," she said getting straight to the point.
I nodded, but I knew that I didn't have time. I gave her a hug, and she squeezed so tight that I knew she was scared to lose me. After I left her room, I knew that I might not have been there for much longer. As I realized that, I thought about Skye. If I don't help her with this stupid project, she's going to fail. I remembered that I was supposed to call first, but I forgot to get her number. I sighed. I kissed Sadie on the head before I left, because these days, there is no telling if i'll be home.
I walked downstairs and grabbed my sweater and an umbrella. Then I headed over to Skye's house. I got out of the front door and looked across. The house was barely visible through the rain. As I got closer, the image became more clear. Skye was running down the street in a black hoodie and blue skinny jeans. She had no umbrella and she was getting quite wet. I followed her because I didn't know what was going to happen to me, but I wasn't ruining her school life over it.
She made a turn down toward the library. I followed, and she didn't stop until she got to the back corner of the library which funny enough, was non-fiction. I closed my umbrella and walked over to her just in time to see the show. When I got there, I saw a boy. He was wearing a black leather jacket and a black beanie looking down at Skye. He grabbed Skye's hands and I was confused. The only thing I could do was watch the events turn out before me. She didn't rip her hands away, just wrapped her hands around his saying something I couldn't make out. They both had hurt looks on their faces and then he dropped her hands and nodded.
Just as I was gaining control and getting out of shock, Skye looked over at me. Her eyes locked dead with mine and panic flashed quickly through her eyes. I was lost in them even now. That was until I realized what I was doing. Without realizing, I had walked up to Skye and was now eye to eye with her. Whoever the guy was had left, and she grabbed my by my collar and pulled me out into the rain her eyes locking with mine again. She was stronger than I thought.
I finally snapped out of shock and realized that all of my questions had been answered. She wasn't reading, her phone was in the book and she was texting her boyfriend, she snuck out to go see him, she didn't want to eat dinner with her dad because she had plans with him. Skye Hart had a secret boyfriend that nobody knew about, except for me.
"You have a boyfriend. The good girl has a secret boyfriend, " I stated to myself rather than to her. She looked at me for a moment, scowling.
"There is no such thing as a good girl. I just haven't been caught yet. And I intend to keep it that way. So I suggest you go home and keep your mouth shut," she said angrily dodging the accusation. She went to turn away, but I grabbed her hand. I couldn't help myself.
"Or what?" I asked defensively. I always had an issue with letting others talk to me with disrespect. That could be good or bad. As soon as I said it I realized my mistake. She turned around and looked me dead in the eyes once again.
