I knew it was coming as soon as I finished. But I had foreseen this. I had fully known and expected it. I was ready.
"Angel Alethia. Your crime, punishable by both—"
"I know full well my crime as well as the punishment. I'm ready."
A silence, perhaps a pause of surprise. I wouldn't know, as I had my eyes blindfolded. Not my choice. Still, I knew the voice of Raphael, and I smiled just slightly.
"You test my patience every day, child."
A long sigh from me. I felt a little bit guilty.
"I'm sorry." I barely whispered.
"I'm sure you are. But you should have restrained yourself, even just once."
At that, I quieted. I would not restrain myself from something that I knew was the only way to fix the human race. There were the visions, the dreams that nobody else seemed to have experienced. I had seen things.
"Just send me down already."
"Very well. If you insist."
I felt a heat rise within me. The journey was only beginning, I knew. I would have to pose as a human, hiding the scars on my back where my wings would be torn off. Judging from the damage I had observed, I would have to pose as the only lucky human left, the only one who had gained something rather than lost something from the purge I had caused.
But, I had no regrets. Humanity had been very quickly spiraling towards a miserable end. I had only hastened the rebirthing cycle. The humans had been turning on themselves.
Civilization, as it was, had been wounded.
