As soon as the words left my mouth Connor straightened in his seat. His eyes blazed, glaring at me as if I were the problem.
"Whoa, why do you get to tell me what to do? I came here to work. Not to deal with this shit. Besides, you're just some woman who thinks she's the big deal just because she got a job at a temporary hospital."
Connor stood and made as if he were going to try and throw a punch at me. I just waited for him, ready to knock some sense into that thick skull of his.
"Listen up, Connor. I don't need to deal with your attitude. Would you like to know why?"
"You better tell me why, then."
I nodded at Chip and he gestured to me.
"Connor, meet the doctor who began saving the lives of all people around the world. The one who saved your mother. Dr. Aurelia Clover."
I crossed my arms and shifted my weight to one foot.
"What do you have to say for yourself?"
His mouth opened and closed, sputtering in his attempt to process this information.
"Nothing. You both are dirty liars. Just as I expected from new doctors. Trying to play a trick on me? Well too bad. And by the way, your choice in flowers needs some work."
Beckett, walking in then, stared at Connor.
"You broke the flowers." He growled.
"Beck – "
"No. No. I trusted you when you said it was that girl. I trusted you when you said you would respect my coworkers. Most of all, I trusted you to be grateful for Dr. Clover saving your mother. You should go."
Connor, it appeared, hadn't anticipated this turn of events. I hadn't either.
"Beckett, you told me Dr. Clover was a genius doctor!"
"She is. I never specified man or woman. Besides, if you still think men are superior to women then get your head out of your ass and your mind out of 1960."
"Women can't be doctors!"
"Actually, of the three best practitioners in Dr. Clover's office, two are women. And the one man is Dr. Elbane. Dare to argue?"
Chip and I exchanged a look. Beckett hadn't seen this side of Connor either, not with this kind of disrespect for others. Secretly, I was relieved that Beckett had stepped in. Maybe he would be the only one Connor would listen to.
"You know what, Beckett, I don't need to put up with this. If this is your idea of a brilliant practical joke, I'm not believing it."
"Then leave."
"I need my job. You promised me one."
"Then sit down and shut up. How hard is it?"
"Connor, have you had any anger management classes?" I piped up.
I got my answer immediately. Connor spun to face me, his eyes shooting sparks, and let out a mindless shriek.
"I don't have issues! You all are the twisted lot. Forget it. Beckett, I trusted you. Seems I was wrong."
"Then leave."
"Fine. You didn't get me the job, so I won't hold up end of the deal."
As he slammed his way out, Beckett turned to me with a mix of shock and horror on his face. He blew out a long exasperated breath and set his mug down.
