I was not one to be under prepared. So when Chip came back with all three throwing knives and two of my spares, I was quite relieved. There had been countless instances where I had encountered a demon only to have to run and find it another time from lack of weapon. I wasn't about to let that happen yet again. As much as I was not human, being on Earth had reduced me to little more than such.

"Did you bring something for yourself?"

"Yes, I brought my wits."

"We've only been here three days and you waltz about as if you know the place by heart."

"Because I do."

My head whipped toward him, and I let out a long breath. He should have told me. He should have said something. Why were humans like this?

"This was your hometown?"

"Indeed."

"Chip, if you had told me I wouldn't have made you come here. I could have let you stay at our last stop."

"No, I'd rather stay with you honestly. Who else could do what I do?"

I knew he was right. He was the only one I trusted with the knowledge of my beginnings, and the only one I trusted to cover my back in a demon hunt. Even so, I felt guilty. I had dragged him back to his own city. Surely, then, there must have been some nostalgia, seeing it in ruin like it was. Or did he feel nothing?

"It's a bit odd, seeing it this way. Most of the buildings I knew are rubble now."

I made a mental note to make it up to Chip somehow. The only thing I had sworn never to tell him was that I was the cause of this. Chip only knew that I was an angel, sent from Elvirund to aid the human race in its restoration. He knew that I had hid out for five years to observe them after the explosions so that I might blend in better. He knew that I had some secrets I would tell nobody. But I refused to tell him I caused this.

"This city isn't all that big anymore, compared to others. It used to be the busiest city before this. We should be able to hit the most common gathering places in about two hours."

"You scare me sometimes, you know."

Chip raised an eyebrow.

"How?"

"You know so much about the most random things. It's unsettling."

He chuckled before shrugging.

"No, this is how a lot of humans are. We're inquisitive. So we find out."

I sighed. To be able to just question something so easily, that would have been wonderful, I imagined. Of course I imagined, but I could not know. There were things that even visions could not tell me, and I longed to know what went on in the heads of these mortal creatures.

"Let me see if I remember. You couldn't just do that."

That was the simplest way of putting it, though there were many facets to the law that I didn't understand. Mostly because I chose not to understand. Had I been someone else, maybe the want or need to delve into Elvirian law studies would have emerged at some point. I only knew what had affected me based on my actions.

"There were three rules in Elvirund. Together they were called the Three Pillar Laws, and they were as follows; don't question, don't speak out, and don't interfere. It sounds simple but it restricted most of what we did."

"Is that why you're here now?"

"Yes. I broke every rule there was to be found. I questioned, I spoke out, I interfered, I rebelled. And so much more."
