{Simon's POV}

I was not going to let my best friend and his girlfriend be killed by this man.

I took the chair that was abandoned on the floor and swung it at his head. He ducked, and turned around towards me, pointing the machete at me.

"Put. Down. The. Chair." He said. He jabbed the machete at my chest to make a point.

I sighed and put down the chair slowly. Behind the man, I could see Lewis stand up. I saw Hannah take out her cell phone, silently press buttons, then set the phone down on the ground. Lewis lifted his foot and kicked the man's back. The man stumbled a bit, and I stepped back to avoid the machete.

The man spun around and glared at Lewis. He ignored me and took a step towards Lewis. He raised the bat and hit him across the head. Hannah gasped and Lewis grunted and stepped back.

I looked to my left and noticed Candie was crawling on the floor. I walk over to her, and help her up. She winces and bites her lip, and I remember her oddly shaped ankle. I set her down on the bottom stair, and sit down next to her.

"Are you okay?" I ask.

She nods, and hugs me. I hug her back, and we don't move until I hear loud thuds from the living room. I kiss her forehead and stand up.

"Stay here," I say. She nods.

I walk back into the living room, and see that the man has pinned Lewis against the wall. He had his arm pushed against Lewis' neck, just like the man had Duncan pinned.

"Let him go!" I yell. The man looks at me, smirks, and pushes Lewis against the wall harder. I take the chair from earlier and hold it up. Lewis' face starts to turn a light blue.

I hold up the chair and was about to strike when the man grabs Lewis' hair and hits his head hard against the wall. My best friend falls to the floor, unconscious.

The man then faces me, and I swing the chair down and smack him. He kneels down, his lip bleeding. He glares up at me, then his gaze flickers to Hannah. I think he just realized that she was still awake.

He stands up, his gaze on me again. He grabs the end of the chair again, and starts to push against it.

I push against him, but I am no match for this guy. He might be more fit than Sam. I was thrown backwards into the other wall, with the chair falling from my grasp.

I look up to see him swing the bat at Hannah's head, and her body falling limp. I see Candie looking terrified from the stairs, not knowing what's going on and not wanting to see.

"Simon!" Duncan yells from the bookshelf.

I look up to see the man coming towards me. I throw the chair off of me and stand up, quickly backing away into the kitchen. The man followed me, the bat in one hand and the machete in the other.

I find an island in the kitchen and use that as a shield. The man starts to come around the island, but I move so I'm always on the other side of the island. We move like that for a while, until he finally gets frustrated. He takes a plate that was left on the counter with..... something rotted on it. Uck. He throws it in my direction, and I have enough reflex to move out of the way. He keeps throwing things at me, getting rotten and molding food all over my clothes.

He suddenly steps on a barstool and leaps over the island, the machete and bat swinging. I take steps backwards, and the man manages to stay on his feet.

He swings the bat first, and hold out my arm to shield my face. It hurts quite a bit, but I ignore the stinging and try to block other attacks. He keeps coming closer, to which I take steps back.

I am hit on all sides but still going, when I feel the wall on my back. I can't go any farther away, and my arms and sides are probably littered with bruises.

That's when I feel him sink the machete into my stomach.

{Candie's POV}

I was on the floor, watching everything happen. I couldn't stand, or do anything to help. I see Hannah dial something on the phone then set it down, out of sight of the man. I think it's completely useless at first, but then I realize that it was probably the most helpful thing that happened so far.

She dialed the police. They would hear what was happening, and come to help. I silently thanked Hannah.

I saw Simon coming towards me, and help me up. I wince as I put weight on my ankle, and bite my lip. He seems to get the message and sets me down on the stairs.

"Are you okay?" He asks. I nod, not wanting to speak. Without thinking, and hug him and bury my face in his shirt. He hugs back, but stands up when we hear thudding from the living room.

"Stay here," He says, and I nod. I didn't want to move. I think if I tried to stand, I would fall and damage my ankle more.

He goes out of my view, and I hear more thuds.

"Let him go!" I hear Simon yell. I wonder who 'him' is. I see Duncan pinned underneath a bookshelf on the other side of the room, and in my line of sight. I see him mouth something to me, and I cock my head at him.

He mouths to me again, and I think he's trying to say, 'Everything will be okay'. I nod, although I don't think this is going to end with 'okay'.

I suddenly see Simon run into the kitchen, the man hot on his heels. I hear shuffling, and then things hitting the floor. There's a loud crash, like someone hitting the floor hard, and I hope it wasn't Simon.

My worries were eliminated when the two came out of the kitchen, Simon backing away and the man throwing hits. I wince every time a hit lands on Simon, but he doesn't seem to care.

I hold my breath when Simon hits a wall, but I don't worry too much with the determined look on his face.

My mistake.

I see the man shove the machete into Simon's stomach.

I hear someone screaming, and I realize it's me. I'm screaming 'No' over and over again. Simon seems frozen, like he couldn't believe what happened. The man laughs, and slides the machete slowly out, probably very painful. Duncan has a shocked look on his face. I wonder if we're the only two conscious people left to witness these events.

The man looks at me, and I feel hot tears run down my face. Simon is huddled on the ground in fetal position, holding a hand to his wound. The man walks towards me, and drops the machete and bat on the ground. Probably a good sign, but I don't trust it.

He gets closer, and grabs my arm forcibly. I kick and scream at him, calling him nasty words I wouldn't normally say, and demand him to let me down. I kick at him as drags me up, ignoring the screaming pain in my ankle.

He pushes me against the wall, grasping my throat with both hands, cutting off my air.

"Do you know," The man says through clenched teeth. "Your real parents, Candie?" I can't respond. I'm running out of air.

"Or should I say," He says. "Candie.... Dean?"

I can't respond, but if I could, I would yell at him and tell him he doesn't know me.

"Your Candie Dean," The man says. "And I'm Harry Dean. Your father."

I almost didn't catch that. I see black spots in my vision, and my lungs feel like they're about to burst. I can't think, but that piece of information is etched into my brain.

Then the door bursts open and policemen enter. I fall to the ground, my ears ringing, and I take a huge breath of air.

I pass out anyways, but the last thing I see is Simon's worried eyes locked on mine.
