“Hey,” Kaleb smiled as I sat down next to him in his car. He turned up the heater trying to block out the cold damp air that formed from the rain this morning. It was now noon and he texted me asking if I wanted to go get lunch.

“I’ll just have a chicken sandwich,” I handed the waiter my menu. The chicken sandwich was the only thing on the menu that I knew how to pronounce. I looked around the fancy italian restaurant. After we finished eating Kaleb paid for our lunch and said he had a surprise for me. We drove down to the park that was near my grandma’s apartment. He parked by the empty grassy field. We walked to the bench where an older couple were just leaving to walk their dog back home.

“That could be us one day,” he smiled.

I shifted uncomfortably on the bench. It made me uncomfortable and kind of nauseous that he was talking about our future already since we’ve only been dating for a month. I smiled back, not wanting to be rude.

“Remember when we first met here?” he asked referring to the time I tripped and he caught me. It sounded too cliche.

    “Yes,” I smiled.

“Why did Drake come to find you?” he asked.

    I was confused. “What?”

“When we were talking Drake came running after you. How do you know him?”

“Why does it matter?” the look in his eyes scared me, “I moved in with my grandma for the summer and he is living with her because his grandma is in the hospital.”

“You’re living with him?” he almost shouted.

“It’s not my choice!” I stood up. Why was he acting like this. “He needs a place to stay, so my grandma offered for him to live with us until his grandma is out of the hospital.”

He calmed down a little, “Be careful,” he said, “I need to drive you home.”

I nodded in confusion and got in the car.

When I got to the apartment it was empty. Just as I needed. Drake and Evan must have gone somewhere. I went to the bathroom and scrubbed my makeup off, making my eyes redder than they already were. What was Kaleb’s problem? What’s going on between him and Drake? My head hurts as I try to change into sweats and a  t-shirt. After five minutes of  switching through channels on the TV, I finally give up and just decide against it.

There were muffled voices coming from the kitchen when I woke up. I slid the heavy quilt off my legs. My grandma must have put it on me while I was asleep. My headache was mostly gone, so I decided to go socialize and try to forget what happened this morning.

“Hey, we were just thinking of grabbing some dinner!” My grandma smiled like it was no big deal. She was in a red t-shirt and her denim overalls.

“Just give me twenty minutes, I should be ready,” I forced a smile and made sure to never make eye contact with Drake. I don’t know why, but I felt like I should be mad at him and Kaleb. Neither of them were willing to just cooperate and explain any of this to me.

After getting dressed in my jeans and pink crop top, I slip on my sandals and try to cover up my pain in makeup.

The little diner isn’t crowded at all. It is five thirty, so I expected it to be more crowded. We slid into a booth. I sat next my grandmother and across from Drake.

“What can I get y’all?” the waitress asked. She had high blonde hair (most likely fake) and a huge chest (most likely fake as well). She looked about nineteen, if you were able to see past the mask of makeup.
