Chapter Three

"Hey mum"Sam said without taking her eyes off the television.

"Hey baby"Court' said and gave her a kiss on her right cheek."had dinner?"

"Burnt by Aunty Laine"

"Again?"she asked looking pissed a bit and Sam nodded.

"I'll go make something else okay?"

"'Kay mum"

Courtney walked into the kitchen and met Laine tapping her phone while smiling. She looked at the gas cooker and perceived the smell of Bean sprouts.

Laine looked up and said"hey,you're back so early?"she sat on the kitchen counter.

"Yeah. Why Bean sprouts for lunch?"

"Well...it got burnt,I mean,the food"

"I get it"she snapped.

Laine looked shocked and watched Courtney as she took a bottle of water and drank everything. She sat on a chair and closed her eyes while breathing in and out with her face buried in her hands.

"What's wrong with you?"

"Bad day at work"she said while picking a banana from the bowl of fruits on the table.

"What happened?"

"Darren's back"

"Darren?...doesn't ring a bell"

"Dar-ren.Sam's dad"

"Ohhhhhh" Laine said,understanding"wait-what!he's back?"her brain clicked back into reality.

"Yeah. He just walked in, stared at me like a weirdo, tried to remember who I was but he eventually did. He couldn't even remember me. Can you believe that?" She said and threw the untouched apple in the waste bin. She tried taking another fruit but Laine stopped her.

"I think that's enough"she said."but what gives?"

"Everything gives"she let her hand open in explanation."He's gonna come back to my life. Do you know what that means?"

"No?"

"He'll take Sam away. That's exactly what he wants"

"Ohhhh...so that's what you're afraid of"she said."look Court'...you're a great person. You've been taking care of Sam' ever since you bore her so there's no big deal"she tried to comfort her but Court' only sighed."Court' just calm down. Do you love him?"

"I..I'm confused"she confessed.

"Just look away when you see him. Walk away like he doesn't exist. I'm telling you. He'll let go"

"Yeah,Right. Like that's ever gonna work"she ironically said."I don't know how he found me although, he did say something about me leaving without telling him"

"Did you do that?"

"I..."she paused 'cause Sam walked in.

"The pizza guy's here mum"Sam said.

"Oh...I'll be right there"Court' said.

Courtney and Samantha had pizza for dinner and when it was time to go to bed, Court' sang a lullaby to Sam'. She pecked her forehead and gently closed the room door when she slept.

She entered her room and sat at the edge of the bed. She stared at Sam's picture on her bed table. She couldn't just be mean to her daughter. She tried so many times but she couldn't do it.

She loved her daughter dearly and now that Darren's in the scene, she can never surrender her daughter to him.
