It's been almost eight years since, I met Calypso, when the...incident happened. We were walking to her house from school, since her dad wasn't going to be home tonight, as usual.
"So, Rowan, have you told Matias yet?" She winked. I blushed and looked at the ground.
"No," I answered quietly looking up at her.
"Have you told Dominic?" I asked her. She frowned and replied,
"No."
"Why can't boys just tell us if they like us or just want to stay friends," I complained, throwing my arms up, "I mean seriously, that would make this a lot fucking easier for us!" Calypso laughed and said,
"Cause they're afraid of the same thing as us. Rejection." I sighed and looked at her.
"Are you sure your dad's not home?" I asked her for the fifth time now. Calypso nodded as we walked up the steps to the door. She unlocked it and opened the door. It smelled the exact same as the last time, alcohol, I scrunched my nose as I went inside. The whole house was a mess, empty bottles of booze on the floor, shot glasses on the table with a half finished game of poker. Dirty dishes were still in the sink, looking as if they hadn't been washed in ages. Clothes scattered throughout the house and the furniture. Calypso walked over to the lamp and pulled on the chain, but nothing happened.
"C'mon, work you piece of shit" she murmured, pulling the chain down harder and harder. She groaned in annoyance.
"Try turning on the light in the kitchen," she told me. I went over to the kitchen and flicked the switch, nothing.
"It's nothing over here!" I shouted. I went back to the living room, but Calypso wasn't there.
"Calypso!" I called, walking down the empty hall. I looked in the all rooms up stairs, but she wasn't there. Then I heard a shriek,
"Aaaaahhhh!!!" I turned towards the stairs.
"Calypso!" I ran down the stairs to the basement, it was pitch black. I turned on my phone flashlight and found Calypso lying on the floor under the stairs.
"Calypso!" I ran over to her and shook her. She moaned and opened her eyes.
"We need to get out of here!!" She yelled. I looked at her confused and asked calmly.
"Wait, why?"
"He's here," she whispered. My eyes widened, as we heard a loud SLAM! We ran to the door to find it was locked.
"Help! Help! Anybody! Help!" I screamed, banging vigorously on the door.
"Help! Stop! Please! Dad!" Calypso cried, shaking the knob. Calypso collapsed to the ground sobbing and screaming,
"Fuck! This is all my fault! We never should've come here!" I sat down next to her crying as well, rubbing her back slowly in circles until she calmed down a bit so I could talk to her.
"It's not your fau-,"
"Yes it is!" She spat, sobbing even harder now. "All I ever fucking do is break things!" Calypso shouted in between sobs.
"Like, when my mom died, I was only THREE! How the hell could that happen! I should've gone to your house that day, then you wouldn't be in this mess!" She dug her face into my shoulder and cried even more.
"Hey," I snapped, lifting up her chin so she could look at me. Her brown eyes were puffy and darkened with sadness. Tear stains streamed across her cheek, and her black hair stuck to her forehead.
"Don't say all that stuff, none of this is your fault, you don't break everything! This friendship isn't broken and you wouldn't have started it if you hadn't walked into my room eight years ago, and I don't regret a thing since that day!"
"But my mo-"
"You had nothing to do with that!" I interjected, "It was your dad's fault for driving that night, he wasn't paying attention! That's how the crash happened! Your mom was just in the wrong place at the wrong time, OK!" I had never talked like that to Calypso before, it felt so commanding. Calypso just stared at me in awe and stuttered,
"OK,"
"Alright, now get your ass up so we can find a way out of here," I stood up and reached for Calypso's hand. She grabbed it tightly as we walked back down the stairs.
