"This one is in critical condition!!" A nurse yelled from the other side of the hospital. I placed down my tray on a desk before briskly walking over to the cries of the young man. Looked to be in his early 20's, but that was a rough guess considering the fact that his face was covered with blood. Looks like a shot to the head, just grazed the side. He's very lucky to even be alive right now.
"Just kill me, kill me please" he mumbled, rolling his head side to side as he looked to me and the other nurse with pleading eyes
"Sir, you'll be alright" I tried to reassure, which seemed to work as his head stopped moving and he decided to cooperate. I lifted his head gently, wrapping gauze around his head tightly to try to stop the bleeding. The other nurse took care of the shot to the stomach, damnit this kid had already lost too much blood. I thought it was gonna be a good day, and that we weren't gonna lose anyone.
"Tell..tell my momma that I love her. And my old paps too. My little brother, Johnny. And my girlfriend, Jenna...tell them...not to be..mad at the war...this is what I wanted...to serve for my...my country"
His eyes slowly started to shut, and I looked over to the other nurse with panicked eyes. She responded by shaking her head as she looked to the ground.
"I will sir" I told, before his head went slack. The other nurse went to covering his body up with a blanket, used to this routine of them confessing their feelings, then sadly dying.
"Lets take him to the back miss" she ordered. I nodded softly, as we each carried an end of the stretcher to lay him down in the room which I..rather not talk about.
"Thank you, for your bravery" I whispered, giving the boy one last look before walking out, ready for the next patient."Three coming in!! Helicopters just landed!!" A female voice shouted. I ran to the front, noticing four nurses working on one male while two worked on the other. The last one on the right had no assistance and I quickly ran over, examining the boy.
This boy had to be no older than 20, his young boy face smiled no matter how much pain he was in.
"Hello beautiful lady" he smiled, however I couldn't tell if it was genuine or not.
"Hello handsome" I decided to satisfy him, not knowing if these were his final moments in life or even if he was thinking right.
"Shit, hurts like a bastard" he mumbled, looking down at his ribs. I immediately spotted the bullet wound, knowing the bullet had to be in there. I grabbed the tweezers from the desk, trying to get a hold of the bullet that caused all this bleeding from him.
"Ow ow fuck" he muttered, grabbing ahold of my wrist without the tweeter in hand. I allowed him to do so, fully concentrating on getting the bullet out to save his life.
"There you go" I softly smiled, placing the bloody bullet on the desk. I then cleaned up his wound; having him groan in pain the entire time. I felt bad, there was nothing I could do about it. I placed gauze directly on the wound, holding it there and getting a good look at his face. Despite all the dirt and blood covering his head, his hair was blond, anyone could tell that. He must've had the prettiest blue eyes, but since he was in pain they looked to be a cloudy blue.
"Feel a little better at least?" I asked, using my fingers to push back his hair, running my fingers through the tops of it.
"Now that there's an angel looking down on me, yes"he grinned. You giggled softly at his comment, taking your hand away from his hair and taking off the gauze."Could you check my knee too, miss?" He questioned. I nodded, looking to his knee to see something clearly wrong. I immediately did what I was taught and brought his knee back to par. I had to sew the skin right below his knee back together, making sure to do it right and fast. I looked up every now and then to make sure he was still with me, usually looking at his scrunched up facial features.
"It's alright, you're doing great" I reassured, testing to make sure I mended his knee correctly
"Alright, anything else?" I sat up from the seat placed at the end of the stretcher and moved to stand by his side.
"A-am I going back out there soon?" He shivered as he spoke, clammy hands rubbing at the sides of his pants
"First you need to heal a bit more, then we'll take it from there" I replied honestly, cleaning up the station for the next man to come and get helped.
"Thank you, for saving me" the boy said just above a whisper. I finally looked him in the eyes, getting a good glimpse of his face. I have to say, his eyes were very intriguing. A blue that you could just stare into all day. I snapped out of my thoughts, smiling politely towards him
"Thank you for saving America" I replied, getting one last look before turning away, going to find another nurse.
"Could you help me move him into recovery?" I asked, trying to ignore all the screams of pain and the gasps of shock around me, along with the loud noise of helicopters outside that no matter how hard you tried, couldn't be blocked out.
The nurse nodded and followed me back to the man, who kept his eyes fixed on me as we carried him to the cheap beds, but at least they were more comfy than the stretchers.
"Onto the bed, sir" I instructed, helping him as much as I could by putting my arm around his waist, helping him slowly sit up. He placed his right leg down on the ground, avoiding his newly stitched knee and hopped onto the bed with a loud sigh. I helped get him situated, asking if his pillow was okay or if he needed some water.
