I was wagging my tail next to Steve as we marched toward the camp, it was obviously getting closer. The smell of stinky men was near and getting closer each step.
"This was hell of an adventure." Bucky said as he draped an arm over Steve's shoulder. I barked in confirmation and saw that Bucky smiled as my tongue rolled out happily.
I could feel my body start to shake with excitement as I tried to tone it down but everyone else was starting to really joke and make fun of each other (in the good way) and it was very enthusiastic.
It was when we started on the road to camp that everyone went a bit serious again, enough that I really did get control over my emotions.
Steve as leading us into camp, everything was still as the red and white gate slowly lifted and we were there, marching into camp from a suicide mission.
The soldiers that were already in the camp lined up and made a path so we could head to the sergeant. Claps followed us as the soldiers welcomed everyone home. I couldn't help but raise my head a little bit higher when I got some stares.
"You did good boy." Steve whispered to me making me feel pleased as I rushed past his and Bucky's legs toward Peggy who smiled and pat my head as I jumped on her, I only reached her knees.
"Hi Peggy." I barked wagging my tail, of course I was ignoring my grumpy-somewhat-grumpy right next to her who was watching everyone, mostly Steve though who had disobeyed his orders.
I felt my emotions go cold as Steve said he would hand himself over for disciplinary actions, part of me went straight to Gabe but the other part knew that he would get kicked out of the army.
The one thing he's wanted since he was little, probably my age if I had to really guess. I hopped off Peggy and stood beside Steve waiting to hear what the sergeant had to say.
"That won't be necessary." The sergeant said making me wag my tail just a bit to show happiness especially as the sergeant had a small, proud smile on.
"Yes sir." Steve responded looking maybe just a bit relieved.
"Faith uh." The sergeant said as he turned around and passed Peggy. Clearly something went on between the two but I didn't know the story and it wasn't like I could change into my human form and ask.
They would freak out if they knew that the small wolf pup they helped back into health was a child, not only just some child but it would inevitably lead to knowing about the Greek Gods and that I'm a son of Poseidon, adopted son of Artemis. Yeah, that's a no-no.
Peggy moved closer to Steve as everyone was watching what Steve was doing, the war hero in a way, "You're late." Peggy said and Steve ducked his head for a second to stare a me. I just nudged his hand and jumped onto his legs while wagging my tail.
Steve reached around me and grabbed the broken transmitter, "Couldn't call my ride." he said acting just a bit serious.
Peggy let out a small sigh and Bucky, wanting to break whatever was between them shouted, "Hey! Let's hear it for Captain America." and somehow the name just seemed to stick with Steve as everyone clapped.
The crowd all responded with happiness and cheers and I may have let out a bark or two to join in for the make-shift clapping.
It was from then on that the sergeant allowed Steve to help with the enemy strongholds that he saw on the maps. When he did go out a lead a team I had to stay back with Howard.
It wasn't that bad but come on, if I was allowed on the rescue mission I should be allowed on breach-and-clear missions.
But sergeant put his foot down stating I was too small and could easily be killed, I even tried to give Steve the puppy-dog look (which was a lot cuter now that I was a dog) and he just had to stare at the wall uncertain and say okay.
Of course it stunk not being with Steve, but at least I got to welcome him and Bucky home after each mission. Well, them and the Howling Commanders. That was pretty cool because they were pretty cool guys. They also didn't seemed to be that unnerved that Steve had a pet wolf.
They could also hold a drink, which kinda reminded me of the time that they were celebrating some sort of victory. I forget which stronghold they went and dismantled but every time they did, they always got beer and pretty much got smashed.
So, this particular day when I could come with them to the bar, I was on the table as they drank their beer, Steve had gone off to talk to Bucky about something leaving me with them. I wasn't too worried.
That was until they did get a bit smashed and one of them set their mug down quickly, and very loudly that I panicked and jumped off the table.
Obviously they were confused but weren't too worried. Though my heart was beating fast as I found Steve (thank you nose and ears) and ducked under his chair.
"Percy?" Steve asked as he slowly stood up and picked me up, "What's wrong." he asked and I pawed my ears, now that I really focused I could hear more clinks from mugs hitting mugs and it reminded me too much of Gabe.
I felt soft hand petting my head, near my ears and I pushed the senses to the back of my head and just focused on the hand. I blinked a few times, when did my eyes close? And stared at Bucky who had an amused expression mixed with a bit of worry.
"I'm sure it's just a bit loud in here. If you're done talking to Peggy and drinking, let's get out of here. You have that meeting with Stark tomorrow." Bucky said playfully hitting Steve's shoulder.
Steve retaliated by doing the same and I relaxed in Steve's hold as they started to walk back toward the compound. Sure, loud noises may startle me, but as long as Steve or Bucky were there, everything was fine.
