I sat in my room, alone. The sound of dripping faucet water fills my ears in the silence. I was bored, had nothing to do except sit and wait for something interesting to happen, which may never come. The silence was getting to me, slowly but surly. My mind started playing tricks on me.
I was alone at home. My parents had gone out together. I was happy because they hadn't had much alone time for the past few months. My older brother was out with some of his friends and I didn't have a pet, so it was just me.
As I said, my mind started playing tricks on me. I started hearing strange noises and fake footsteps. This was quite common for me, being the type of person to think I hear such things when I was alone. I tried to pay them no mind, for I knew it was just a mind trick, but it just seemed so real that I couldn't help but get spooked by it.
It was still bright out and I decided the best way to get my mind off of the fake noises was to go outside and play. I grabbed my badminton racket and birdie out of the garage and went to the front yard. I liked to bounce the birdie on the racket when I was bored. It calmed me and it was a good time waster.
As I moved around to hit the birdie, I noticed one of my neighbors was outside, checking the mail.
"Good morning, Mr. Smith!" I called, still bouncing the birdie on the racket.
"Oh, good day to you too, River!" He said, waving at me, "You're getting pretty good at that. Where's your brother?"
"Thank you, and he's out with some of his friends." I said.
"He's a nice young lad! You remind me of him! Same deep brown hair as his." The older man said, running a hand through his grey hair to fix it as if he was about to meet someone important.
I sighed quietly. People were always comparing me to my brother. He was the top player on the basketball team at his college. Everyone that knew him always gave him high praise and talked about him as if he was very important.
As Mr. Smith walked back into his house, I tripped on a rather large hole and it sent me tumbling to the ground. I stood up and brushed myself off, looking at the whole. Since when had that been there? I shrugged it off and continued on with my game.
