Several Months Later

"Phil! Come on, let's get out of here!" Alex called to me from outside. I dug my knife into the walkers skull and dropped it the ground.

I picked up my bags of food and ran out the front doors of the convenience store, bumping right into Alex.

"Woah, easy!" Alex laughed, placing her hand on my shoulder. "Come on, the sun is going to set soon, let's get back to camp."

Everyone sat at the fire, finishing up whatever was left of their canned foods.  I looked around at everybody and smiled.

Alex and I found a group of people about our age on our journey. There were four of them, all heading somewhere they weren't really sure of, just like us. We decided to travel together.

Three days ago, we found an abandoned warehouse which didn't have a single walker near it, which was pretty lucky. We aren't sure how long we're staying for, but it works for now.

I think about Dan every day. He's the first thing I think about when I open my eyes, and the last thing I think about when I fall asleep. I know I'll never be over him, not really, and I don't want to be. He was my best friend, the love of my life. He was my everything. He is my everything, and that will never change.

Alex never brings him up, which I'm grateful for. I haven't told anyone in the group about him, and i'm not sure if I'm going to. Talking about him doesn't bring him back, and it doesn't make anything better.

The fact that I'm alive is all I need. It's all I need to remind me of Dan.

"Phil?" Alex snapped me out of my thoughts. "Do you want to get them out?" She asked me, probably for the second time.

"Get what out?" A guy in our group, Eric, asked.

"Phil got marshmallows for us" Alex answered with a smile.

Everyone silently cheered and laughed as they continued their conversations with each other.

I went in my bag and got out the small plastic bag of marshmallows. Everyone got four to split the bag evenly among us. When the bag came back to Alex, she nudged my shoulder and handed it to me.

"There's one left" She whispered to not disturb the others' conversations. "Do you want it?"

I smiled and took the marshmallow, throwing it into the fire. Everyone looked at me with confusion before returning to their chats.

I looked back at Alex, who was still staring at me with her eyebrows raised.

"You could have just said no" She laughed. I shook my head, giggling at her response.

"For Dan" I told her. She turned back to the fire and rested her head on my shoulder for sympathy. Everyone else's talking died down as we all just sat and watched the fire burn.

For Dan.
