I stood, in shock, as I took my attention away from Tracy & looked back at who I thought was my husband. I stepped forward to throw my arms around him, then I stopped, a disappointed & confused scowl on my face. He looked like Nick, but like Nick from the future. I heard Tracy's footsteps as she came closer to us & then I heard her mutter, "Rick." Her tone was laced with disdain, which I didn't understand. Who was this man? And why did he remind me so much of my husband?
I looked at Tracy, then back at this older version of Nick, now growing impatient, to know who this man was. "Rick?" I furrowed my brow at the man, who looked so much like my husband, I was angry at him, just for that reason alone.
"Demi. This is Rick Harris. He's Nick's father." Tracy crossed her arms, pursing her lips as she glared at Nick's father.
I looked Rick up & down, still astonished at how much he looked like Nick. Not only was he in a military uniform, but his stance was exactly like Nick's & the resemblance between them was uncanny. He looked away, sighed, then looked back at me, ignoring Tracy's hard stare. "Demi, it's a pleasure to meet you, even though, it's under these horrible circumstances." He stepped forward to shake my hand & I shook it, with slight hesitation.
"How did you hear?" Tracy asked him, sounding like she was accusing him of something.
"It's been all over the news, Tracy."
"What are you doing here, Rick? Your son is dead. What reason do you have to be here, now?" Tracy was almost yelling & I glanced in the car, to see Evan was asleep, already, thankful he couldn't hear the tension.
Rick looked at Tracy, a hard expression on his face. "I don't want to miss out on knowing my grandson, like I missed out on knowing my son. You kept me from Nick & now you can't keep me from my grandson." Rick stepped forward to look into the backseat of the car. "Oh wow... he's a handsome little guy."
"Thank you." I said, then Tracy sighed, loudly, beside me. I turned to squeeze her arm. "Tracy, please. I would like to talk to Rick. Would you mind going into the house to give us time to talk?"
Tracy rolled her eyes & shook her head in disapproval. "I will be right inside if you need me." She said, with a sigh, before she turned on her heel.
"Thanks." I said, then watched her walk into the house. "Let me roll down the windows, since Evan's inside, the car, sleeping." I opened the car door & rolled the window down. I leaned on the driver's side door, after I rolled that window down & crossed my arms. I looked up at Rick, then smiled, almost involuntarily, because this man was so attractive. Now, that I looked at him, a little closer, I saw that there were slight differences between him & Nick, but they looked enough like each other, that there was little doubt that he was Nick's father. "What did you mean when you said Tracy kept you from Nick?"
"Just what I said. She kept me from him."
"How so? She always said you left her & she never heard from you again."
