I couldn't move, since I was in shock seeing Nick get out of the car. When he took a few steps & was close enough for me to touch, I whispered, "Nick? Is it really you?"

He reached out to pull me into his arms & mine went around his neck, squeezing him so tight, I wondered if he could breathe. "Yes, it's really me." He replied, choking on his words.

The moment I heard his voice & inhaled his scent, I started sobbing, uncontrollably. I closed my eyes, hoping that would help stop the tears, because I wanted to be able to see him, once he let go of me. Of course, being in his arms, right now, made me not want to ever let him, let go of me. I wanted to keep holding him, for fear of him disappearing.

After what seemed like minutes, Nick, finally, spoke, into my ear. "I know I promised I'd never let you think I was dead... I'm so sorry, baby. I couldn't." His voice caught in his throat. "I wanted to.... I just..."

I let go of Nick & leaned back to place my hands on his face. "Ssshh... don't say another word. I know you would have if you could have. I'm too happy to be mad." I smiled, trying to blink away the tears so I could see his eyes, clearly. I saw his mouth turn up in a smile & I couldn't not kiss him. My lips were on his, in an instant & I let out a soft sigh. It had been so long since I kissed him that I had forgotten what it felt like. I pulled my lips from his & stared into his eyes. "I can't believe you're here. I'm not dreaming, am I?"

Nick shook his head, smiling, broadly. He leaned to kiss my lips again, then he moved his mouth to my earlobe & bit it, making me yelp. "If you were dreaming, that wouldn't have hurt." He winked, then something caught his eye over me. Whatever it was made him tear up, even more than he had when he first hugged me. "Oh my God... Evan." He said in a breath.

I turned to see my mom, holding Evan, with Denny beside her. Denny & my mom were both smiling, but my mom was bawling as she walked toward us. Nick took my hand as he walked toward her. I watched Evan's face as he stared at Nick. I had shown him pictures of Nick, pretty often, but Nick didn't look exactly like the photos. He was darker than most of his photos & he looked like he had aged a few years, in just six months. Nick let go of my hand & held his hands out to take Evan, but Evan grabbed onto my mom's shoulder, like Nick was a monster.

Nick's face clouded with disappointment, so I took Evan from my mom

Nick's face clouded with disappointment, so I took Evan from my mom. Nick kept watching Evan, tears in his eyes, then he swallowed & smiled at me. "Evan.. your daddy's home. Can you believe it? Say Daddy." I sniffed away the tears that were still wanting to come. Evan just kept staring at Nick, looking frightened.

My mom grabbed Nick to hug him & then it was Denny's turn. After they hugged him, I put my free arm around his shoulder & kissed him again. Nick put his arms around me & Evan, to hug us both & thankfully, Evan didn't protest. "He's not sure what's going on. He's starting this stranger anxiety thing, too, so don't take it personally. It's anyone he doesn't know. By this time tomorrow he's not gonna leave you alone." I said, leaning my head on Nick's shoulder.
