My family tried to talk me out of going home, but I needed to be in my own home desperately. Finally, since it was late, I agreed to let Evan stay at my parent's house & I'd come get him in the morning or my mom would bring him home. I didn't have the heart to wake him anyway.
Denny was a little more stubborn, than my parents. He was more concerned about me & didn't want me going home alone. He said he would follow me home & make sure I got home safely, then he'd make sure I was okay, before he went home to his family. I knew my brother wasn't going to let up, so I agreed to his terms.
I said goodbye to my parents, then headed home, Denny following me, in his car. When I pulled in my driveway I sucked in my breath as one of the garage doors went up. There was Nick's prized possession, the car his great uncle had owned, that was now his. He hardly drove it anymore, but it still felt like a blow to my chest when I saw it. Nick's other car, a newer SUV was parked, in the middle slot of our 3 car garage. Once the correct door opened I pulled in & got out of my car. I ignored the cars that reminded me of Nick, as I stood there waiting for Denny to get out of his car.
"You sure you're ready to do this?" Denny asked when he got closer to me. I nodded, then headed into the house.
I put my keys on the hook by the door, then saw the sign I had made for Nick, welcoming him home. I stared at it, looking at the tiny hand prints I had added from Evan. Suddenly, I became angry. The anger was building, more & more, making me shake. I walked to the sign & grabbed it, ripping it off the wall & screaming out to release a little of the pain I felt.
I turned around & saw Denny watching me with a worried look on his face. "You can go. I'm fine. This just upset me. I forgot it was here. I'm good now, I promise."
"Demi. I can stay. Lydia will understand."
"I'd rather be alone, if that's okay. You don't have to stay Denny. I'm fine. Thank you for being concerned."
"That's what big brothers are for. I'll leave, I guess. If you're sure..."
"I am sure. I really want to be alone."
"Call me if you need anything. I love you, sis." Denny came over & hugged me. I hoped he didn't sense the anger I was feeling, but if he did he didn't say anything. I watched him leave, then waited until I heard his car pull out of the driveway.
Once I knew I was completely alone, my hands balled into fists & I started huffing & puffing. I picked the 'welcome home' sign up off the floor & ripped it to shreds, screaming the entire time. As soon as I let the last piece of the sign fall to the floor, I saw the photo of me & Nick that sat on a nearby table. I snatched it off the table & wailed as I gripped the frame, hard, in my hands.
I threw the frame & watched as it shattered a vase, that had the flowers Nick had given me for Mother's day, in it. I saw the broken pieces, of the vase fall to the floor & the flowers made me angry. I'd never get flowers from him again. These flowers that were now scattered on the floor, would be the last flowers I ever got from him.
