"Alice, you need to talk to me." Miles says, " I'm fine now. I'm sorry I scared you. Now you're scaring me."

I look up from the pile of Miles clothes on the floor that I've been eyeing for hours and into his worried eyes.

I don't say anything, I just look at him.

"Stop frowning!" He says a little too loud.

He scares me a little and I jump.

"I'm sorry. Just talk to me. It's been 5 days." He says.

"I'm fine." I managed to say.

"No, you're not. Alice, stop pushing everyone away. I got hurt, not you."

"I can't help it, Miles," I say quietly. "I didn't think you were going to wake up."

"Well, I did." He says happy, " I'm breathing, Alice. I'm not dead. Stop acting like I am."

"I just don't know why anyone would want to hurt you. It was your first day." I say looking at the pile of clothes again.

"Maybe they were just angry and thought I was a punching bag." He says.

"You still don't remember who it was?" I ask.

"Nope. But whoever it was, I'm sure they didn't mean it." He says shrugging.

The door bell rings and I quickly get up.

Mum and Liam are out with Oliver and Blair so it's just Miles and me.

I open the door and see Owen standing there with his hands in his pockets.

"Uhh. Hey." He says sounding nervous.

"Um. Hi. What are you doing here?" I ask him.

How did he know I lived here?

"I wanted to see how Miles was. I heard about it at school." He says.

"Miles is fine. He's getting better. He's a fast healer, so he will be able to come back to school soon." I say.

"That's good. So does he know who did it?" He asks a little awkwardly.

"No. But he does remember talking to a guy named Dennis before everything went black."

Owen tenses a little.

Does he know something?

"Oh. Well, I just wanted to see if he was okay. I'll see you at school." He says walking back a bit.

"Yeah. See you there." I say.

He walks down the three steps and then down the sidewalk.

Toby pulls up in his driveway and when he gets out of the car, Owen and him a staring contest.

Owen slowly walks past him and gives him a look.

Toby gives a nasty look.

Owen shakes his head and continues walking.

Toby slams the car door and looks over at me.

He gives me a smile like nothing even happened.

I give him a small smile and then close the front door.

I walk back up the stairs and then back into Miles's room.

"Who was it?" He asks looking up from his laptop.

"Just a guy from school asking how you were," I say sitting back down on the bean bag.

"Oh. Okay." He says.

My phone buzzes and it's a text message from Toby.

Toby- What did Owen want?

Me- Nothing. He just wanted to see if
Miles was okay.

Toby- Okay.

Damn. What was with them two?

Whatever it is, I'm not getting involved.

"Alice, mum wants to spend a little while longer with Blair and Oliver, so can you start dinner for her? Liam had to go to work." Miles says looking up from his phone.

"Uh. Fine." I say getting back up from the bean bag and walking down the stairs.

For dinner, tonight is steak and vegetables so I start to peel the carrots.

Once I'm done, I put the carrots in a bowl of water to keep them alive and juicy.

I just begin to start peeling the potatoes when the door bell rings AGAIN.

I quickly wash my hands and then swing open the door.

Toby is standing there with a bunch of papers and books.

"Hey, Alice. This is the work that Miles has missed out on in school." He says giving the pile to me.

"Oh. Um, thanks. I'll be sure to give it to him." I say taking the pile and nearly shutting the door.

I have things to do!

"Wait." He says stopping the door from closing. "What did Owen want?"

Why does he want to know?

What's with them two?

"He just wanted to know if Miles was okay," I say.

"Anything else?" He asks.

Dude, I just wanna continue peeling the freaking potatoes!

"Nope."

He looks at me in a way that makes me uncomfortable.

He gives me little nod and then walks away.

What the hell was that?!

I shut the door and then walk up the stairs to Miles's room.

"Toby just dropped these off for you," I say giving Miles the work.

"Thanks." He says not taking his eyes off the TV.

I walk back down the stairs and continue to peel the potatoes.

Then the phone starts ringing!

Seriously?! Can't a girl just peel her potatoes in peace?!

I quickly answer the phone. "Hello?" I ask.

"Hi. Is this Alice?" A male voice says.

"Um. Yes. And you are?" I ask.

"I'm not important. I just want to know if Miles is okay." He says.

"Yes, he is," I say.

"Okay. Thanks. See you soon, Alice." He says and hangs up.

What the hell is that supposed to mean?!

I finally get to finnish the potatoes without any interuptions.
