Ignoring the four boys' warnings, I crept out of the Gryffindor common room swiftly. After thinking for a moment, I quickly shifted into a small puppy and headed out into the cool night air. The full moon was high in the clear sky and not a cloud was in sight. The stars shone brightly in the sky and they reflected off of the ice that covered the Black Lake.
Shuddering as I heard what sounded like a wolf's cry and then a yelp that sounded oddly familiar, I shifted into a large silver wolf and trotted towards the sounds. Pausing and cocking my head in confusion, I realized the sounds seemed to be coming from inside the Whomping Willow. Shifting into myself, I cast a freezing charm on the tree before sliding down the dirt tunnel. Returning to the wolf form, I followed the path out into a small building. The yelps were coming from the second story and despite the growing pit of dread in my stomach, I headed up the wooden stairs, my nails clicking against the floor. Nudging the door open, I let out a small whimper at what I saw.
A large wolf-like form stood over a black dog while a stag tried to stand between the two. A small rat scuttled back and forth across the floor. Something about the dog's eyes seemed familiar as it looked towards me. The wolf-like creature did the same and growled menacingly. I caught a whiff of its scent and froze, my fur prickling across my back- werewolf. A deep growl built in the back of my throat as the werewolf approached and it paused slightly before turning back to the dog. Letting out a warning bark, I nipped the wolf's neck and stood between it and the dog. The dog's leg was badly mauled and it whimpered as I stood above it. The stag pushed the werewolf back with its horns and the wolf let out a small whimper before it curled up.
I desperately wracked my brain trying to remember if werewolves were safe around other wolves. Deciding to test my theory, I moved away from the dog and shifted to an even larger wolf before approaching the werewolf. The wolf dropped his head slightly as I approached. Satisfied that the wolf wouldn't hurt me, I curled up next to it, licking the wounds that covered its face and back. The dog yelped in pain as it tried to stand before falling back to the ground. Looking worried, the stag nudged the dog's leg before cocking its head at me. The rat skittered towards me and looked closely at my face. I watched as the werewolf bit its own leg harshly, drawing blood. Snapping my jaws in warning, I nudged the wolf's teeth away and began licking the wound. The stag approached me and I stood quickly trotting towards the dog. It looked up at me, wincing in pain and I froze as I recognized the grey eyes.
"Sirius?" the word fell from my lips and the dog looked at me in confusion. I couldn't risk shifting into myself with the werewolf in the room so I merely licked the leg wound, hoping that some of my power could transfer to heal his leg.
Sirius shifted slightly as his leg began to glow and I let out a small bark as his leg mended. Bites from a werewolf weren't normally able to be healed, but in his Animagus form, he couldn't be infected. The stag trotted back towards me and I noted the white marks around his eyes that looked like glasses. I returned to the werewolf, desperately trying to keep it occupied so it wouldn't scratch itself.
As the sun rose, I watched in shock as the werewolf transformed into someone I knew. Remus Lupin. Remus Lupin was a werewolf. The boy shuddered as he looked at the scratches that covered his body. Shifting back to myself, I watched as he clawed to get away from me.
"Remus," I raised my hands in surrender as the animals shifted into the rest of the Marauders, "I'm not going to hurt you."
"But, but," he gasped, glancing down at a harsh scratch that went across his chest. Blood was spurting from the wound and I crouched down next to him, placing a hand on his shoulder.
"I'll explain, I promise," I told him softly, "Just let me help you. You're bleeding really badly."
"How? Why? How?" Sirius sputtered as I ran my hands over Remus' cuts and bite wounds. Remus winced as my hand touch a particularly large bash in his back and I apologized frantically.
