"Lily, we have to bring dates," I hissed as Lily and I perused the numerous aisles of formal dresses.
"So?"
"We don't have dates," I pointed out, watching as Lily shrugged and held up a blue dress with dreadful ruffles.
"I'm sure I would look ravishing in this," she joked, her green eyes lighting up as she laughed. I pulled out a black dress with a super low cut and a long black train made of pearls.
"I could marry the prince in this," I quipped, looking at the fancy dress before putting it back on the wrack.
"Well, Slughorn did say it was a ball," Lily replied, flicking her long red hair over her shoulder and pulling out a emerald green floor length gown. It had soft ruffles and an elegant patter across the front.
"Try that on," I ordered, skimming through the racks as Lily held the dress up, looking unconvinced.
"It looks a little too formal," Lily observed, going to put it back on the rack before I grabbed her arm.
"Don't be silly," I glared at her, before smirking, "I bet if James saw you in that dress, he'd have a coronary."
"Well, then. I can't not try it on, now can I?" Lily cracked a smile before draping the gown over her arm.
About thirty minutes later, we each had plenty of dresses to try on and decided to retreat to the dressing rooms so we could pick. After pulling on various dresses that all varied in style and color, we each decided on one. Lily had decided on the green-blue gown with beading along the front that she had thought was too formal. It looked beautiful with her red hair and it stood out against her pale skin. The dress was flattering, highlighting her slim figure and accentuating her bust.
"Are you sure about this?" I asked, looking at the dress in the mirror. Lily pulled back the curtain so she could see and cuffed the back of my head.
"Of course, it looks amazing on you," Lily said in an 'are you serious right now?' voice. I glanced at the floor length dress with its shimmering bodice and the skin that showed on the side.
"What if Slughorn thinks I'm a slut?" I asked, turning to see the side-boob it showed. "It is a little revealing."
"Nonsense," Lily declared, "It's perfect. And you're getting it." Sensing that the matter wasn't up for debate, I followed Lily to the counter where we paid for our dresses.
"There's still the matter that we don't have dates," I said once again as we hurried towards the Three Broomsticks, desperate to get out of the cold swirling wind.
"Well..." Lily paused and gave me an apologetic smile before she nervously told me, "I asked Severus if he would go with me."
"Great, now I'm the only one without a date," I declared as we walked inside the pub. The sound of students chattering at their different tables filled the air along with merry laughs and the tinkling of glasses.
"Two butterbeers," Lily ordered, shivering slightly as she spoke to Madam Rosmerta. When the woman nodded, Lily motioned to the tables.
"Here, let's find a table," I turned and a small grin rose upon my lips as I saw the only empty table was next to Marauders.
"No. I will not sit there. I will not," Lily refused, jutting her chin out and squaring her shoulders.
"You had a date to this ball and you didn't tell me until today. You will sit there and you will be polite," I argued, raising a perfectly plucked eyebrow before dragging her over. "Hey, guys," I greeted, giving the Marauders a wide smile before catching sight of the bag in Remus' hands. "You were invited to the ball too?" I asked, shooting Remus a sympathetic smile.
