Sounds of retching woke me from my peaceful slumber as I tried to bury my head back into my pillow. However, a ray of sunlight landed directly on my face, earning a small glare as I sat up. It took me a few seconds to realize where I was as no one else was in the boys dormitory. Another bout of retching came from the bathroom and I groggily stood before knocking on the door.
"Don't come in here," a voice choked out as I leaned against the door. I vaguely registered that it was Sirius' voice before pushing the door open. Sirius was hunched over the toilet as the contents of his stomach reappeared. Swallowing as I fought to keep my own stomach under control, I watched as Sirius flushed the toilet and leaned against the wall his breathing heavy.
"Here," I filled a small glass with water and handed it to the wavy haired boy, sitting next to him, "Where are the others?"
"They went to breakfast. Remus left a note," Sirius replied tiredly, letting his head fall back and grimacing as it hit the wall harder than expected.
"Oh."
"So, what exactly happened last night?" Sirius asked, moving so he could lay on the bathroom floor with his face pressed against the cool tile.
"Well, you drank most of the fire whiskey, then you coerced me into giving you the rest of mine. Afterwards, you saw the empty bottle and proceeded to accuse me of drinking it all," I informed him dryly, "Then you passed out."
"Sounds like something I would do," Sirius muttered, squishing his cheeks against the tile and sighing loudly.
"Oh, and you have to ask McGonagall on the next Hogsmeade trip," I reminded, giggling as Sirius groaned and pretended to kill himself.
"At least it's not until after Christmas," Sirius consoled himself before sobering up, "Talia, about what you saw yesterday..."
"It's none of my business," I cut him off gently, remembering his discomfort from the day before. His behavior still puzzled me, but I wasn't going to press if he didn't want to talk about it.
"Thank you."
"Are you feeling any better? We can always go to Madame Pomfrey," I offered, remembering that the healer never snitched to McGonagall if we came in with suspicious illnesses or injuries.
"Yeah, I'll be fine," Sirius assured me, giving me a small smile as he slowly stood and held out his hand. He easily pulled me up, reminding me once again of the muscles that lined his body. He walked towards his bunk before something smacked into his face. "Bloody hell!" he screeched, glaring at the barn owl that was ruffling his feathers indignantly.
"Hey, little guy," I murmured, gently removing the letter from his beak and rubbing his feathers affectionately. "Huh, it's for me."
"Freaking bird," Sirius shot the fluffy owl a dirty look before curling up on his bed with a small sigh. My eyes quickly scanned over the paper as I read the letter.
Tali,
McGonagall is heading towards Gryffindor tower. She's looking for you. Get out of the boys dorms.
Lils
"Oh crap. I'll be back, but McGonagall is looking for me," I told Sirius, shifting into an owl and flying to the girls dormitory window. Of course, with my luck, the window was firmly closed and locked. Alice, I thought with a small frown before flying back into the boys dormitory, into the common room, and finally into the girls dorms. I spotted McGonagall in the common room and quickly flew even faster as I tried to save my ass.
Shifting back into myself, I looked down at Remus' Gryffindor sweater and immediately pulled on a pair of jeans just as Alice entered the dormitory.
"McGonagall is looking for you," she told me, smiling at my disheveled and slightly flustered expression.
"Thanks," I muttered, before turning to face the cheerful girl, "Can you make sure that window stays unlocked?"
"Sure," Alice conceded, giving me a puzzled look before rifling through her trunk. "You better go. McGonagall looked pretty fired up." Sighing loudly and trying to put on a solid face, I headed down to the common room to see Professor McGonagall waiting with a stern look on her face.
"You asked to see me?" I yawned and ruffled my hair, trying to pretend I had just woken up when in reality I was still in Remus' sweater and I probably smelled like fire whiskey.
"Miss Edwards, Professor Dumbledore would like to see you in his office right away," Minerva told me, bustling off towards his office at a surprisingly fast speed.
"What?" I paled drastically at the news and jogged after her, "Did he say why? Am I in trouble for something?" Professor McGonagall let out a small snicker, earning a confused look. "What?"
"No, dear," she assured me, "you're not in trouble. We actually have some exciting news for you. In regards to your family."
My head snapped up and I almost broke my neck on the missing stair as I turned to face the woman. After recovering from my near death experience, I snorted, "Exciting news? In regards to my family? That's like cooking with fat-free lard. That's like James and Severus waltzing their way into the sunset. That's like--"
"Acid pops," the stern woman cut me off as she gave the password to the stone gargoyle, "You can take that up with the Headmaster. Up you go."
The sight I met was completely different than what I expected. I expected to see my mother, clothed in her dark robes and ridiculous hats perched on one of the chairs in Dumbledore's office ready to scold me for something. I expected her to ask Dumbledore to resort me for the thousandth time, or even for her to pull me out of Hogwarts and enroll me in a different school. Instead, my mouth fell open and tears immediately filled my eyes as I looked at the person in front of me.
"Dad?"
