We went down a short hallway that then opened up to a living room. She lead me to the left into the doorway. In there was an open kitchen and dining room, only a wall with a bar counter separating the two.
Her mom was by the stove cooking something, I can't tell what. I let go of Alex's hand, causing her to look at me strangely. I don't know what's going on between us and I definitely don't want her mom asking questions.
"Oh there you two are. Michael had to go back to the station and fill out some paperwork regarding Tobin's father. He'll be back here for supper." Pam said, looking away from the stove and at both of us. Alex nodded in response.
"What do you mean, what kind of papers?" I asked, not sure what was going on. She put down the wooden spoon in her hand and wiped her hands on her apron.
"Your father was still at the house when he got there with a few other officers. He was rushed to the hospital but once he's in better condition, I hope he's going to jail for what he did." she said, looking at me with pity. Did she feel sorry for me? I'm not even sure how I feel.
She went back to cooking and started humming. Alex took my hand again and started walking towards the dinning room table. When we got there I let go and stepped back.
"What?" she asked with a confused look on her face. Why is she so touchy? Did she forget about Servando, because I sure as hell didn't.
"Why are you so touchy? I'm pretty sure your boyfriend would try to kill me next if he knew you were grabby with me." I said a bit coldly. She rolled her eyes and sighed.
"Just because I have a boyfriend doesn't mean I can't hold someone's hand. I'm not being disloyal to him. It's not like I love you or anything, I'm not going to start making out with you." she spat but kept her voice low so her mom couldn't hear. She doesn't love me. That's what I thought. Glad it's clear.
"Why do you want to touch me all the time then?" I asked, starting to get frustrated with her. What's the deal?
"Maybe because we were attacked and you're the one that got us out!" she yelled, causing her mom to look. "I'm afraid okay? I'm afraid that something might happen to me or you."
"You barely even know me. Why would it matter if something happened to me?" I yelled back. She was starting to confuse me. I felt my chest start to pound again.
"Because I care about you Tobin! I'm scared and I feel that you're the only person who can protect me." she yelled again. She took my hand and pulled me in closer to her. I looked at our hands and then back at her.
"What do you want from me Alex?" I asked, looking into her blue eyes. The eyes that I could stare at forever. The eyes that I could get lost in.
She stared into my eyes. Our faces were inches apart now. I leaned forward and started closing the gap between us. I connected my lips to hers. I realized she wasn't kissing me back so I pulled away.
"I'm sorry... I just thought. Wow. I'm really sorry." I said frantically. I'm such an idiot.
"Smells good, what's cooking?" came a male voice. We separated quickly and looked in the direction of the voice. It was Servando. Was he invited?
He looked at Alex, then at me. He clenched his fists and furrowed his eyebrows.
"What are you doing here Servando?" she asked, her voice higher than usual. He laughed at the question.
"Oh you know, just came back to pick up what I left from last night. Mainly my shorts" he said smirking. I looked at Alex and she blushed. "The real question is, why is Heath so close to you, and why does she look worse than usual?"
"Okay, that's enough Servando, next time you come into this house, have an invitation." Alex's mom said, ushering him out of the kitchen. I heard him whining as he was being kicked out.
Alex looked like she was about to cry. Her face was turning completely red and her eyes were getting glossy. Her mom came back and gave her a look.
"We'll talk some other time about that." came her mom's voice. "Dinner won't be ready for at least 30 minutes and I think you two have something to talk about."
I followed her back up to her room. She closed the door and flopped on her bed. I just stood in her room.
"You can sit next to me you know." she said, patting the place next to her, still laying on her back. I walked over and sat a few feet away from her.
She sat up and turned her body so it was facing me. I looked down at my hands, fiddled with my fingers. She cleared her throat.
"I do care about you Tobin." she said, looking into my eyes. I only looked back for a few seconds, then went back to my hands
I got too ahead of myself and now I just screwed things up. I thought I had a chance with her, just a slight chance.
She stared at the other side of the room. I could tell she was thinking hard about something.
"How about we just forget that happened." she said quietly. I swallowed hard, not liking the idea of it. I started to get angrier and angrier by the minute.
"How about I do you one better. I'll be your captain and your classmate and it will be like nothing ever happened."
A/N:
This was a weird chapter to write.
