It was as if the rain was silent. No one dared to make a noise. We were all looking at the same thing. The two bodies. One completely fine and one in excruciating pain. I took the girl and lifted her off the other.
"Take her to Percy right now. And as for you, I want to see you in my office." coach said from behind me. "I would also like to talk to you Tobin. When you're done helping out Alex."
That's when it hit me hardest. At first I was in denial. It couldn't have been Alex. It shouldn't have. It should have been me.
"Tobin. Percy's. Now please." she said again. I released the one girl and picked Alex up bridal style. The second I turned to face everyone lightning flashed and a loud crack of thunder rung out. "Everyone get inside."
The girls started running in for the athletics hall. They went in the side door leading to the girls locker room and closed it behind them. It automatically locks from the outside. I'm hoping that Kelley got our bags or at least someone did. I jogged with her in my arms, not wanting to cause any more pain.
"Excuse me! Could you move!" I said going through the only unlocked door, being the main athletic entrance. It was full of football players in their gear. No one was paying attention.
I started pushing past people, earning looks from the guys. I had gotten halfway through the hall when he had to show up.
"How many times will I catch you getting your dirty hands on my girl Heath?" he said, earning laughs from the two guys beside him. How cute. He has his own little henchmen.
"She's hurt, so how about you get out of my way and let me take her to Percy." I said trying to get past him. I could feel Alex's arm that was around my neck move as I felt her squeeze my shoulder. She winced as a guy bumped into me, pushing her into someone.
"Move your asses or I'll talk to David. Have fun sprinting." Percy said loudly over the crowd. Everyone looked at him as if they needed clarification. "Make a path for the injured soccer player."
He was like the Moses of the American footballers river. I walked down with Alex to Percy and in to his office. I put her down on the cot gently and stood next to her as Percy looked at her ankle.
"On a scale of one to ten, how's the pain." he asked her, pointing at the make-shift chart Kelley and I made in our Sophomore year. It was when we both were in a boot.
We took his athletic tape and a sharpie and made the pain scale. It went from '0: why are you here' to a goofy one Kelley wrote '11: stepped on a lego'. Never grew up with any legos but Kelley told me to trust her that it's one of the worst pains you can experience. It even surpasses '10: gun shot wound' all though she of course hasn't been shot.
"Is 11 a valid answer?" she asked somewhat jokingly, letting her head fall back onto the cot after looking at the chart. She closed her eyes tight and grimaced.
"I'd say so, you have a serious tear." he said, moving her ankle one last time. He looked at me as if to say 'see?'. I nodded as her ankle bent way too far in the wrong way.
"Do you want to go to the hospital by ambulance or with a parent?" he asked. She kept her eyes closed and went to say something but words didn't come out. "I know it hurts, I'm sorry, I had to move it. Hold up one for ambulance, two for your parents."
She held up two fingers and he went to the phone. I couldn't help but feel so bad for her. I stood there and held her hand, feeling a tight squeeze every so often. Perce was done on the phone and walked back
"Woah. Why didn't you tell me you were bleeding?" he said to me, getting his stool. I forgot that I was. I sat on the other cot and looked at my sock.
It used to be white. Now it's got a lot of red on the front. I slipped off my shin guard and slid my sock down, revealing the gashes in my leg. He went to the cabinet and got gauze, a gauze pad, and some Neosporin.
"You'll need to wash it off." he said to me. I nodded and got up. The only way to do that was to go back to the girls locker room and to the sinks.
Thank god the hallway was clear. Not a football player in sight. I went in to see the girls talking. When I walked by, people went silent.
I went to the sinks and lifted my leg up and ran the water. I put it as cold as it could be so maybe it would numb it a bit. I turned back to the door and left without saying a word to anyone. I was walking back to Percy's office when I saw the coach in there.
"She'll be alright, might be able to play in the end but it really needs to heal." Percy said to her. She looked at me in the doorway and waved me in. "Let's take care of this."
"What happened to you?" she asked me. Apparently she didn't notice it either. She probably was only there to see Alex get tackled and not what happened to me.
"Same girl who took Alex down was gunning for me. That's the only reason she got Alex, I went out of the way of her tackle and she took Alex and not me." I said. She looked at me and nodded. Percy started putting on the Neosporin and I tensed my leg and flinched at the contact. I wasn't expecting it.
"Well don't worry, that type of behavior is not tolerated on Varsity or JV either. She'll be lucky if we switch her to B squad." she said. I nodded and looked at Alex. She was asleep. I could tell because I've seen her sleep. Probably best for her if she didn't feel the pain while asleep. "However I did ask you to keep things cooled down."
"I know. I'm sorry. No one even did anything to rile her up. She just started going ham." I said. She sighed and nodded. It really wasn't my fault.
"Alright. Well, I've posted the teams inside the locker room so I'd say steer clear of that situation." She said laughing slightly. I completely understand. A mix of tension, anger, happiness and excitement in a room full of teenage girls isn't always so great.
A/N:
